Re: Look Both Ways

Interesting.  Note that there are usually a lot of circumstances where it is perfectly legal to cross in the middle of a road.  It obviously depends on jurisdiction, but I've found that usually jaywalking is narrowly defined. Here's a sample ordinance: 21955.  Between adjacent intersections controll...

Re: PP humming along again

Good for you, Budd.  If only I took my own advice!  I put in limit orders a few days ago for equal amounts of stocks, bonds and gold in a Roth account.  Guess which asset purchase went through, and which are still sitting there because the assets took off skyward and left my limit order in the dust...

And how would a 1920 Cornell grad do on my EE exams?

None of the above (AFAIK, the specific combination might be unique to dox me), but staying semi-on-topic I'll note (it is known) that I'm an EE who went into law.

p.s. I found learning about both subjects very rewarding, but practicing not so much.  Which is why I pursue FIRE

Re: Resurrecting the debate of Leverage using a house

1) If you can't afford to pay cash for the home, you can't afford it.  Tyler, I completely disagree with your rule #1. Putting aside whether it is best to rent or purchase, mortgage financing  is the best way to purchase a home.  This is especially true at today's historically low interest rates. I...

Which broker(s) have commission free ETFs?  It seems TD Ameritrade is happy to charge $9.99 on all ETF trades. Thanks. TDAmeritrade offers 100+ commission-free ETFs, including many by Vanguard. Annoyingly, you have to sign up for the program by calling in and requesting, or by logging into your acc...

Re: TAX-LOST HARVESTING: Worth it for the PP??

Isn't there a risk with tax loss harvesting in the event the asset you exchanged then quickly shoots up in price and you need to rebalance? This could force you to either pay short term capital gains (at the ordinary income tax rate) or else delay rebalancing, I would think. So, if you sell your VT...

Re: TAX-LOST HARVESTING: Worth it for the PP??

Apologies for necrothreading, but doesn't make sense to start a new topic. Does tax loss harvesting really provide a big advantage?  Assume I already have enough of a banked loss that I max out my $3k regular income deduction per year (I do).  Is it worth swapping my PHYS for CEF for 31 days, and th...

Re: Sprott Intends to Make Exchange Offers for Central GoldTrust and Silver Bullion

Picked up some CEF to tax loss harvest the PHYS.  At around 5% discount, I'm ready for a takeover now!  I know it isn't pure PP, but I'm only planning to hold for a month (although I'll see how I feel in a month).  Hopefully this is kosher with wash sale rules, as I suppose the gold component could ...

Re: I'm noticing a lack of threads about how terrible the PP is

It took a year, but I'm back to my previous peaks.  I hated 2015, but didn't change my AA so that's a good thing I guess.  The recent rapid rise is scary, however.  Makes me expect an equally sharp drop in the near future (which will of course such since this is the time of the year I do all my cont...

But remineralization relies on fluoride. I don't believe that's true. It may be that fluoride can help with remineralization, but there are many examples of primitive cultures all over the world that had perfect teeth and virtually no cavities from vitamin-rich and mineral-rich diets alone. It's no...

I do drink fluoride-free water and I don't use toothpaste at all, in fact, and never have. My teeth are fine. To my knowledge I've never had a real cavity. I now have magnets sitting on 6 old hard drives.  Three are pretty strong.  The availability of a sledge hammer in Manhattan, NYC, is not good.  I used to split oak with a wedge and mallet but my parents sold the place- would have been fun. How long do I leave the magnets in place?  Should I rotate...

I don't know about the rest of you but in my limited PP experience of about 5 years it seems to me that economic fear is the best news that the PP can have. Last year it was just a little anxiety but now we have real fear. for sure.  It's definitely skewed towards crisis and away from prosperity.  ...

That's similar to the 15/35 bands

Re: I'm noticing a lack of threads about how terrible the PP is

The PP is having a good 2016 so far.  Historically, when the PP has had a few soft years it will have a couple of years with above average returns. I don't know if 2016 will be that year, but the way the PP has behaved historically suggests that it is due for a good year. Gold is also an asset that...
