Re: Implementing the Permanent Portfolio

Use physical gold, not in the 401k.  And I agree with Rien.  The pot of 401k money is just too big to go unmolested at some point in the future.  Life is full of controversial and/or offensive things which were once unthinkable.

Nothing HAS to happen?

One of my all time favorite Harry Browne sayings is, "Anything can happen, and nothing has to happen."  But, given the course the US government is on, I can't see any way we pay our debts other than significant inflation.  It has to happen.

Yes?  No?

I've seen retail prices of S&W MP15 under $700.

Re: Paper gold risks

Don't forget the risks and expenses of holding physical gold.  If you are only talking about a few ounces, then no big deal.  But if you get into real money, it's not risk-free to hold physical gold.

Re: A change of heart about the PP after reading another Harry book

If all you do is plan to save a good amount of money every year, you'll do just fine.  Better than 90% of your fellow citizens.  When you get right down to it, the key to being well-off is to do better than most everyone else.  That sounds horrible, but if you look at it logically, that's how it wor...

Re: A change of heart about the PP after reading another Harry book

I submit that no lifelong investor goes through life with one unchanging plan.  It just doesn't happen.  I am in my mid 50s, retired, and have had several major investment plans or themes during my life.  And I'm not referring to changes due to my situations.  Over those cycles I developed a feel f...

Re: Need high yield bond or ETF or BDC

Thanks AO, that's interesting.
I have found some conservative BDCs (that's an oxymoron) yielding 7.6 or so.

Need high yield bond or ETF or BDC

I'm the trustee of a charitable remainder trust, and I have a specific need for a high yield bond or ETF or BDC that yields at least 7%.  Believe me, I know the problem with that number.  Without getting into all the whys and wherefores, I'll say that the trust does have other investments.  The sett...

Re: Budding Minimalist...

Very encouraging thread! Currently we have too much house and property.  It's about half of a full time job for my wife and I just to maintain it in spring and summer.  And the equipment requires maintenance and repairs too!  Not so bad in fall and winter when stuff stops growing.  We are shedding t...

Re: Refuting More Rumors

In this latest round of stories, is GLD speculated to be less than fully backed with physical gold?

I know there are always those who say that is the case, but I am asking if there is anything new on this question.  Thanks.

Re: Permanent Portfolio Performance for 2012

So the stock market did almost 3x as well as the PP... I hope someone is checking on Budd's well being. :)

My return was 8.2% but my PP was not in 4x25 balance.  I have not hit 15% or 35% so it's just riding along somewhat out of balance.

Re: Peter Schiff Says The Majority Doesn't Have A Right To Steal His Money

Looks like the topic is now about Ayn Rand.  As you can see from my ID, the book means something to me.  Whatever the foibles of she and her followers, the book was a work of genius IMO.  Genii are strange people. :) Yes, the movies, now Parts One and Two, are somewhat disappointing.  Weirdly, Part ...
