Re: New York's Outdated Knife Law (NYT)
Honestly all modern knives from reputable brands (Kershaw, Spyderco, etc) are inexpensive and awesome. Get what you think looks cool and has whatever features you want in a knife. If you don't know, just get whatever. It'll be awesome! I did buy a Mora based on Coffee's (?) suggestion once. They mi...

Re: Marijuana Legalization
We have pretty high levels of usage of alcohol and cigarettes, I believe. So, we might wind up with high levels of pot use, even in the longer term. Driving under the influence of any substance that impairs driving should clearly be illegal - that's just reasonable. Even if we haven't had a lot of r...

Re: Harambe Must Die
I completely agree about the gorilla. As I said, I'd like it if they could have saved the child without killing him. The whole thing is created by human choices, and if we made different/better choices, it wouldn't have happened. Zoos are often inhumane places for animals (I don't really understand ...

Re: Harambe Must Die
Your suggestion was to do something that might result in the kid dying, and that would be a deterrent.
If the kid didn't do anything wrong, how/why is it ok for him to die? I get that it might deter parents from being negligent, but it seems like a high price for a child to pay to me.

It's not the kid's fault that he was inadequately supervised.
And, kids are naturally curious and will explore things, sometimes in ways that aren't safe. That's why they need adult supervision.

Re: Harambe Must Die
Well, the first question is how/why the child managed to get into the pen. The best thing would be for his parents to have prevented that. Once he's in there, it's a hard call. I understand why we'd want to save the child's life, but at the same time, it's not entirely clear that the gorilla was har...

As far as general health, it's clearly not just amounts of calories.
Ice cream, french fries, salmon and apples all have calories.

The unfunded liabilities include SS, from one of your posts, as well as Medicare parts A, B and D.

Re: Trump would default on US debt?
We're saying different things. I don't know what you think legal protection is, other than a law setting forth various things, like the SS Act of 1935. Part of that law includes the ability to change it, but that's true with all laws - if Congress wanted to, they could change them at any time. Ther...

Re: Why you shouldn't exercise to lose weight, explained with 60+ studies
I also get hungrier when I exercise, and eat a bit more.
But the combination of a healthy diet and regular exercise has gotten me to a good healthy weight and good lab results, so I'll stick with it.

Re: Trump would default on US debt?
If it's not in the constitution, it's not "constitutionally" protected. I wouldn't call that the same as not legally protected, if there are laws that protect it. So treasury bonds aren't constitutionally protected? States aren't allowed to file bankruptcy, but cities are - hence Detroit....

Re: Trump would default on US debt?
I'm not at all sure that's true.
What's in those unfunded liabilities? If it's stuff like SS/Medicare, there are legal obligations about those (they could be changed, but it would require laws, and those programs are extremely well-entrenched by now).

Re: Why you shouldn't exercise to lose weight, explained with 60+ studies
This is just common sense, and what most reputable doctors/health care people recommend. A combination of eating well and exercise. Why are people so focused on finding one narrow thing that will fix everything? Good health involves a variety of different things, like diet, exercise, sleep, stress ...

Re: Trump would default on US debt?
Well, that's just on the edge of what's considered a good debt/income ratio according to a couple of sites I looked at.
The bigger concern would be the huge unfunded liabilities, though, wouldn't it? Looks like those are about 33x the income levels.

Re: Latest Asset Class Returns vs The Average Investor
I think part of it is that it's hard to know what prices are in the markets - whether they're high, in the middle, or low. And, when things go up, people somehow think they'll keep going up, and so they buy. Which creates a self-fulfilling prophecy for a while. Also, when they go down, people are n...

Re: Global Financial Literacy Survey
jafs - instead of "yes" or "no", perhaps the question should be "How much is that $100 dinner eventually going to cost you?" Assume 20% interest on the card and the person in question is making minimum payments every month, let's say $100. The correct answer would be...
