Luckily, I don't have any treasured beliefs.  Everything is up for discussion.  Except for pyramid power.

Re: Danger of Bond ETF's vs Direct Purchase

Thanks, I did end up figuring it out eventually...  I don't understand why nobody offers a daily/whatever chart for each bond.  It's not like we don't have the hard drive space to store it!  Maybe it's out there and I just haven't found it. I never pay attention to yellow... just red and green :-) I...

Paper bonds way down, tlt way up

Someone please explain why my newly purchased 30 year treasuries are down 1.5% today while tlt is up 2%.  It's not because of a coupon payment (issue date 8/15, first coupon 2/15/12 unless fidelity is lying).

This is really disturbing... Perhaps the bond market isn't as liquid as we'd like?

Poll: Which gold ETF?

Leave aside the ETF/stock vs. physical holdings discussion -- it's well covered.  Assuming we are only interested in paper holdings, which do you use or recommend?

If you have a mix, vote multiple times for the ones you like.

Re: 20% annual returns over 40 years...interested?

Consider a 1x that gains 1% each day for 10 days and a 3x that achieves +3% each day for 10 days. The 1x gains 1.01^10 compared to the 3x gaining 1.03^10 which equals 10.4% versus 34.4% If the 1x instead declined 1% each day for 10 days and the 3x lost 3% each day for 10 days then that's 0.99^10 fo...

Non-Inflation Adjusted Pension Redux

This topic was discussed a year ago (http://gyroscopicinvesting.com/forum/http://77.104.139.218/~gyroscop/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=8) but the thread doesn't cover everything. How do you factor a non-inflation adjusted, defined benefit plan into your PP strategy?  Would you still go with 4x25 if your p...

Re: Treasury Bond Buying Tutorial

Why can't you buy bonds now? I can, but not with the proceeds of the sale of TLT until it clears. I suppose that I could have moved cash positions into the trading account but that seemed cumbersome, and I thought I would wait. Of course, that means that Greece and the Euro will go into a nosedive ...

Re: Treasury Bond Buying Tutorial

Thanks, Stone... although I understand the fundamental of how a bond works, I obviously need to do more research on how the bond market works -- I had forgotten about the duration calculation. Thanks also to Gumby for the tutorial.  One note that was still confusing to me: What exactly does the &quo...

Re: Treasury Bond Buying Tutorial

I sold about 80% of my TLT today at the market open, and I have an internal conflict. With the bulk of my long bonds liquidated, I feel as if my left flank is uncovered as I have the three business days before I can buy bonds. On the other hand, and I realize that I am violating the code here, but,...

I would also like to know what the advantage of buying at auction is.  It seems like you'd get slippage due to the multi-day difference between the auction close and the issue date. I'm currently looking at Fidelity and trying to choose between two secondary-market options: Name: UNITED STATES TREAS...

Re: New I-Bond Fixed Rate Coming May 1

Quick question to those who use Treasury direct: When you transfer money to TD, is there a fee charged from your bank? I am a Bank of America customer if anyone else is as well.. Thanks! Under normal circumstances, no -- they use ACH which is the same as your typical credit card bill pay.  BofA has...

Re: New I-Bond Fixed Rate Coming May 1

Good news everybody!  TD is getting rid of the access card (I just kept the a photo of it on my phone but I find the mouse keyboard a huge pain) I also just ordered my paper ibonds at citibank.  A little unnerving since the receipt they gave me has very little info.  I'm supposed to give them 5k now...

Why is this forum so low in the search results for "permanent portfolio"?

It used to be about 4th in google, but now it's almost on the second page.  Why don't I just type in the URL?  Because the root page does not contain the forum and I'm lazy.  Does this have to do with the fact that the root page has no content?  Can we get it to redirect to the forum?

Re: Want to shift to PP, but don't want to lock in losses - What would you sell?

For people who like to feel in control, the PP can be very hard at first.  With practice, though, it gets MUCH easier. It's what it might be like for a control freak from 1850 to be transported to the present and asked to take a ride on a modern commercial jet airplane.  At first, he would probably...

Some people say to DCA in -- not for real benefit but for peace of mind.  I say go all in at once, but then stick your head in the sand for a month.

I'd be really worried if the portfolio only appealed to people with certain political views.  The fact that it draws support from across the spectrum gives me more confidence in the underlying principles.

You've lost the $1000 either way.  The question is whether you'll get the tax advantages.

Why wouldn't you want to lock in losses?  Usually, people try to lock in losses for the tax advantages.

Re: Automatic rebalancing -- good idea?

Historically, there have been only a handful of (annual) rebalancing events in the PP's 40-year life.  Perhaps when you're DCA'ing into the PP or transitioning it might be helpful, but once you're all in it really just works by itself.  I count 12 rebalancing events between 1972 and 2008 (based on ...
