Re: The GOLD scream room
I don't know if this is acceptable, but fuck yeah!! What happened today? Gold was up, but the whole portfolio looks like it's just cruising along at about -3% for the year so far. It's nice to see you feeling chipper though. If I invest like a contrarian, then I hope to reap the rewards when the eq...

Re: The GOLD scream room
No, I'm pleased to see that gold has responded to the decline in the equity and treasury markets. Especially after reading that Soros has dumped a substantial portion of his GLD and GDX holdings. I hold both investments.annieB wrote: Budd:

Re: Converting IT-TE Municipal Bonds into PP
I think you already covered the options pretty well. A bond fund with an average maturity of 6-12 years is definitely going to have swings in value that are intolerable for an emergency fund. Any of your three options seem sane to me. According to VG, the average duration and maturity are around 5....

Re: Converting IT-TE Municipal Bonds into PP
Is the question unclear? I have a portion of my taxable investments in munis, with the balance allocated to the 4x25 PP. I diversified beyond the PP as I was concerned with a DD of 20%. Unfortunately, the IT-TE funds VWIUX is more volatile than I expected. If you were in my position, would you excha...

Converting IT-TE Municipal Bonds into PP
I am somewhat uncomfortable with the volatility of an IT-TE municipal bond fund and the possible draw down an investor could experience in a rising interest rate environment (as well as in 2008). I consider the investment as Tier 2 of my emergency fund with cash in the PP Tier 1. I have a loss and p...

Re: A more volatile PP, part two
The PP trails in times of prosperity and more so when interest rates are on the rise and inflation expectations are low. I'm not sure its prudent to change the allocation unless one expects this particular environment to persist. I have considered adding an extended market ETF to complement SPY in a...

Re: Municipal Bond Funds
Has the Detroit bankruptcy filing persuaded anyone to sell their TE Municipal bond funds? I hold municipal bonds for the taxable portion of funds not currently invested in the PP. I assumed that these bonds were less risky than the PP, but now I am questioning my thought process. YTD they are down m...

Re: UUP ETF - Currency Hedge
Has anyone considered hedging currency risk in the PP? A rising dollar against other currencies has a negative impact on gold and US equities. I am considering UUP, which rises when the USD gains against a basket of commodities. I held it for two years at a loss. After I finally sold it, it went up...

Re: Municipal Bond Funds
Whats the question? The portion of bonds issued by your state in a national muni fund are not taxable on your state return. VWIUX has approximately 4% of holdings issued by the state of California. You can reduce taxes owed on muni distributions by that amount. So what you're saying is I would have...

Bank earnings have been phenomenal to say the least, yet the overall US market has not reacted accordingly, or have they? Re: Not Even Harry Browne Thought It Was Going To Be This Bad
*By inflation I mean an increase in the money supply, not that general increase in prices that follows from the increase in the money supply. Is it an increase in the money supply or the circulation of that supply to the masses (velocity)? We haven't witnessed a rise in inflation even with the incr...

Re: PP investors--stay the course
If single digit losses are causing this much grief to an investor they need to be in 100% cash at a bank. They should not be investing that money at all. And that advice is for any investment strategy, not just the Permanent Portfolio. Life is too short to worry about this if it is an issue. Its no...

Re: PP investors--stay the course
My comments were directed to the recent performance of the PP and not the individual PP investor. A few board members have capitulated publicly and I'm sure many have privately. I plan to stay the course, but wonder whether we will have the same conversation years from now. Re-read some of Clive's p...
