Re: Fidelity - SHV BIL or TBILL ladder (auto roll)

SHV, BIL, or TBILL ladder (or auto roll as I see people calling on it on the forum) or maybe Fidelity short term treasury fund, or vanguard short term treasury fund (I think Fidelity will let me do this). I have the option to choose any of these. IMO, all of these options are perfectly fine. I'd pi...

Great post! Kevin, are you the same Kevin who frequents the Boglehead site? If so, are you a Boglehead or a PP guy?
Thanks; and no, that's someone else on Bogleheads.

Re: How to withdraw cash in retirement?

This is one of these subjects where any thoughtful plan should work fine, so you might as well do whatever you find most comfortable and convenient. An everyday-expense checking account is so small relative to the portfolio that I don't think it matters very much whether it is considered inside the ...

Re: Gyroscopic Portfolios Is Now Under Construction

Glad you appreciate the site and the suggestions. I view the Golden Butterfly as a 4x25 PP plus a variable portfolio of small-cap value. This is compatible with PP dogma for an investor who wants to tilt toward prosperity. I think the GB is fine and I don't think I'd try to talk someone out of it. I...

Re: Gyroscopic Portfolios Is Now Under Construction

Thanks for this effort, it's off to a great start. It'd be nice for this site to reprise Craig's tradition of an annual post on the PP's annual returns, with an explanation for why each of the four assets did what it did, and comparison to a couple benchmarks. Another useful resource would be a list...

GLDM and AAAU are tied with respect to expense ratio, at 0.18%. Does anyone have an argument for why one is better than the other?

Re: Which Assets in Roth IRA?

There are two schools of thought, either "one big PP spread among all accounts" or "one separate 4x25 in each account." When I started out I did "one big PP" but later changed to "separate 4x25". Both approaches work fine and have their merits, so I think this is really a personal preference thing. ...

Re: Best Allocation: Living off just the interest

The question was whether or not a HBPP or GB should theoretically have a different weighting (primarily in its cash component) as it scales due to its underlying principles since a very wealthy person would be at less risk of liquidating lagging assets to make ends meet during a recession. No, acco...

The ETF picks look good. I hold IAU for my paper gold.

IMO, 30/70 total stock/total bond is a solid portfolio where the PP is unavailable.

Member since 2010, just shy of 1000 posts. 1. About what % of your investments are still in the PP, if any? Nearly 100%. DW and I each have a 401k and IRA, and each of the 4 accounts is a separate, conventional 4x25 PP. There is a small legacy retirement account in PRPFX. The only ex-PP assets are o...

Re: PP Performance for 2016

Most of our funds are in plain 4x25 PPs, so those were in the ballpark of the 5.88% Sophie cited. DW also has a PRPFX holding which, I see, was up about 9% in 2016.

No plans to do anything different in 2017; we'll just keep chipping in and rebalancing as needed.

Re: Any opinions on FZFXX

As cash vehicles go, FZFXX looks pretty good. It "...normally invests at least 80% of the fund's assets in U.S. Treasury securities and repurchase agreements for those securities" and 80% T-bills is a pretty good proportion. It's hard to find much better. The expense ratio is high but not outrageous...

Re: What would the PP look like without fiat currency and central banks?

Back on topic, if gold and cash were interchangeable then 25x4 is equivalent to 50% cash, 25% long term bonds, 25% stocks. Note that the total bond market is mostly short term bonds. So the 50/25/25 allocation is very similar to a 75% total bond market, 25% total stock market portfolio. In other wor...

Re: 401(k) Rollover

I prefer to rollover into an IRA instead of the new employer's 401k. With an IRA you can choose the broker, and change brokers at a whim, so you will always have a PP-friendly custodian. Even 401k's with a brokerage window tend to gave a few "gotchas" that cause headaches. For example mine requires ...

Re: PRPFX article on MarketWatch

The short take on PRPFX: it's a convenient, legitimate one-fund PP; expense ratio is quite high; the asset allocation is not 4x25, but is in the same ballpark; it does not always track the 4x25, but that's well explained by the asset allocation differences; returns and volatility are pretty close to...

Re: Things about the PP that do not make sense to me

The cash component: - Retains value during tight-money recessions, so that you can "buy low" on stocks, or even consumer purchases such as real estate and cars. - Prevents you from "selling low" on other assets when you withdraw from the portfolio (as Sophie has analyzed). - Performs well when inter...

Re: Scott Burns' Co on the PP

The comparison of the 60/40 returns to the 25x4 PP indeed isn't fair, because the owner of the 60/40 needs to hold cash. How much isn't clear, but most would recommend a sizeable enough chunk that it's a significant fraction of the stock/bond portfolio. Hear, hear. The time spent accumulating the c...
