Re: Old desktop hard drives

I think really even one wipe is sufficient.  I'm not sure there's been a documented case where it wasn't. If you have a USB hard drive adapter, you should be able to write all zeroes to a drive without having to leave your normal environment.  Something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-5-25-...

Re: Figuring Out Religion

That's a very loaded way to word it, from my perspective. It implies somehow that the "deity of Christ" is a fact, and some people deny that fact. A better way to phrase it would be perhaps that they don't believe that Christ was God. Sounds like the same thing to me. In any case, the wor...

Re: Figuring Out Religion

Wow, that was surprising.  The message was far more religious than I would have guessed.  I think I hit the jackpot with this message; she covered some historical information regarding the Universalist church, constrasted with Calvinism, etc.  Overall though, I was surprised by how much theology sh...

Re: Men, women and sex

I would say that from man's perspective, it's not nearly as bad as actually cheating.  Obviously it's not great, it's not something to be proud of, but here on earth it's not the same as cheating.  From God's perspective, all sin is sin.  In other words, we can't believe ourselves to be righteousnes...

Re: Men, women and sex

That makes more sense the way you rephrased it. So basically, you consider it a 'sin' which, as a human, is unavoidable. But the impure thoughts are not tantamount to cheating. Cheating requires acting on them. But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed a...

Re: The GOLD scream room

More seriously: at the end of 2015 I did some loss harvesting, selling IAU and buying GTU (now PHYS).  I don't believe the wash sale rule applies to gold, but I wanted to avoid any possibility of that, as well as confusion about that on the part of the broker.  GTU was selling at a small discount at...

Re: Figuring Out Religion

In other words, why not nihilism, for the non-religious?  Isn't that the logical end result? I think that if religion is the umbrella, nihilism is the storm.  It falls on us all and we each protect ourselves from it the best way we can using the tools our culture provides us with. This means that y...

Re: Figuring Out Religion

Jesus's coming wasn't "Plan B"; it was the plan from the beginning.  God created sin because without it we couldn't exist.  Martin Luther said that the devil is "God's devil", who pricks at our consciences and lays traps, tempting us, that we might know the depth and breadth of G...

Also, as I think PS pointed out, much of Bernie's crazy would be neutralized by Congress.  But particularly in terms of things like foreign intervention, he'd have his way.

Assuming he doesn't just do an end-around around Congress, of course.

Long bonds are for deflation.  If you hold a promise for $x in the future, and those dollars are worth more and more, then that promise is worth more.

But "revenue neutrality" only matters if deficits/debts matter, right? Otherwise, who cares?  We could implement all of B. Sanders' ideas without raising tax revenue one dime, and just borrow what we need. There are plenty of reasons to be against government action in whatever area.  It's...

Re: Greed is Good (Fodder for a broad discussion of economics :))

Well someone's got to ask the obvious follow-up question... If the idea that revolutions in an anarcho-capitalist society is absurd because there are no examples, isn't the idea of a stable anarcho-capitalist society absurd as well?  Because there are none of these either. I believe that was tech's...
