Re: Another Gold ETF post

What I like about SGOL is: 1) Its custodian isnt a chinese bank 2) Gold is split between london and switzerland giving some diversity 3) They publish an inventory of bars own, including serial numbers periodically 4) they publish vault inspection reports. GLDM has none of these. SGOL is a good fund...

I don't know how they were able to pick out me, selling my Vanguard/Blackrock funds because of their proxy voting habits, among all the market turmoil but YOU'RE WELCOME EVERYONE. The hero we need. 8) I'm also thankful for this thread for pushing me over the edge to trade out of a few Blackrock fun...

It looks like things are actually moving in the right direction on the voting rights front. Vanguard just announced a pilot program that allows retail investors to have proper voting power with their shares. https://www.etfstream.com/news/vanguard-to-pilot-voting-rights-for-retail-investors-in-chall...

Re: Non-ESG ETFs

The problem with BlackRock is not that they offer ESG funds for people who care about those things and want to support them with their own money. Just like paying more for organic produce that is fundamentally the same product, people can pay more for ESG funds if they like. To each his own. The dee...

Re: Non-ESG ETFs

Plenty of gold alternatives out there. Schwab has SGOL which I've used. TLT is the toughest one to replace, probably. GLDM (State Street) is currently the cheapest gold ETF option with a 0.10 ER. For LT treasuries, I really want to like SCHQ (Schwab) because of the very low 0.03 ER. The only thing ...

Re: Non-ESG ETFs

Are there altenative ETFs that are not into the ESG movement? I've also thought about this, but the trick is finding an alternative that isn't doing something similar. Look past the marketing materials and self-serving platitudes of a guy like Larry Fink, and when you get down to it providers are l...

Well I certainly appreciate you taking the time to politely engage with that often-brilliant but even-more-often-curmudgeonly crowd @ Bogleheads Tyler. Let me know if you ever don't want me to post links to Portfolio Charts articles over there; I fear driving more traffic to your site and turning s...

For anyone who wants to go further down the rabbit hole with TIPS I posted Tyler's blog post on Bogleheads and there's a good bit of discussion there (with Tyler participating). I especially recommend the posts from vineviz, who may be the single most savvy bond expert (among many) on that forum: h...

Tyler, where’s the best place to alert you to typos? I found one at Looking Deeper - Going back to the TIPS mechanics we discussed, if you hold a bond to maturity then you get the full original principal pack Crowdsourced editing FTW. Thanks! Re: TIPS vs. the PP Barbell or iBonds: No Contest

My contention that there is asymmetric risk in the decision to allocate one's fixed income in nominal bonds, such as TBM, or inflation-linked bonds, such as TIPS. With individual TIPS held to maturity , their real return known with precision at the time of purchase. There is no risk to the future b...

Re: PP YTD performance - was it the worst ever?

Really? I thought it was the real CAGR for someone who has held the PP for 9 years. I thought that is why there are a lot of negative years in the one and two column, but none when you go far out. Because if you hold the PP for a long time, historically, you always get in the 4-5% real CAGR range. ...

Enlightening. I've read several Harry Browne books and do not remember reading this. Maybe I read it but did not retain the concept. Was this in one of his books? If so, which one? Or is this something he said or wrote elsewhere? That's from "How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World". Highly recommen...

Try Gimp. It's a free, open-source alternative to Photoshop. And it includes a clone tool.

Re: Backtesting the PP all the way to 1971?

Thanks for the info on this. I wasn't aware of the ability to start before 1970; from what it appeared on the website that was the earliest possible start date (the grey blocks on the Excel spreadsheet always were shown as starting at 1970 or later). I have PM'd you regarding a good potential sourc...

I admit this qualifies as a shameless plug (and I promise not to make a habit of it), but another option is to try one of my new standalone backtesting tools . You'll have to supply your own source data, but the individual PP asset histories aren't too hard to dig up and you also have control over t...

Re: Backtesting the PP all the way to 1971?

Hmm... It's interesting that PV doesn't have more LTT data than that. It's a terrific tool, but the way it automatically changes the start year is always kinda frustrating. You can rarely actually compare anything apples-to-apples. For the record, I set the gold return for 1970 on PC to 0% since the...

While it uses simple annual rebalancing rather than bands, Portfolio Charts has the data coverage you're looking for (back to 1970). Here's the dedicated Permanent Portfolio page: https://portfoliocharts.com/portfolio/permanent-portfolio/ And here's a tool where you can adjust the percentages of the...
