Re: Hello! and brand new Canadian PP
Welcome fellow Canadian, hope you're not shoveling out of heavy snow like I did earlier! My canadian permanent portfolio is: Gold: 12.5% GTU.UN, 12.5% CGL Bonds: 25% XLB Stocks: 25% VXC Cash: Spread across some HISAs yield around 1.00% if I'm not mistaken A few considerations: - why are you holding ...

Re: GTU Is The Ideal PP ETF
I say this from experience last year averaging in on GTU and seeing the discount keep getting lower and lower. Per my thread a few weeks ago, I managed to buy more at the bottom by luck when my paychecks became investable, and the position is up 20% YTD, I may end up rebalancing out of gold earlier ...

Re: The pp is back!
Good post, I feel the same way. I started mine only last year, my bonds and gold have shot up quite a bit. The only problem now with all PP sectors in the positive is deploying new funds and feeling like I'm "buying high", but that's the beauty of this model, tossing it toward whatever is...

Re: A Simpler Easier Permanent Portfolio
How clear is the rebalancing strategy? The problem here is that you might sell gold (or need to dump into gold) and you have to contribute/draw to/from both stocks and bonds together. What if stocks and bonds start going in opposite direction, you'd be relying on the portfolio manager to balance bet...

Re: 2014 performance for a canadian permanent portfolio
Hey CanPP good to see a fellow Canadian on here. I use : Cash, GTU.UN/CGL (split 50/50), XLB and VXC, started this summer, hanging tough near a 25%x4 but I'm accumulating and working ...This is 95% of my portfolio, 5% is play money for market timing and so far Im terrible at that. I previously held ...

Re: Small Cap Index Fund ETF instead of S&P 500 Index Fund ETF
For my Permanent Portfolio Stock Allocation, I'm using, IJR: iShares S&P SmallCap 600 Index Fund ETF instead of IVV: iShares Core S&P 500 Index Fund ETF . Is that a good substitute? Personally I don't like using small caps for one reason- the volatility is too high relative to other Perman...

Re: Gold a Life Preserver for Russians
This will be an interesting pilot test for gold and looks like it's doing it's job, more 21st century currency crises to come? I'm hearing interest rates of 17% end of last week in Russia and people hoarding physical cash to spend it as soon as possible. I love how Putin blames the currency speculat...

GTU way way below NAV, what's the lowest it can go?
I'm amazed at how cheap this fund became this year. Sits today at a brutal -7.7% away from NAV: www.gold-trust.com/asset_value.htm The nice thing about rebalancing by addition is that I've bought through 2014 as low as -11% NAV when my gold dips relative to bonds/stocks/cash. I was around through th...

Re: RSXJ
But as I mentioned here regarding GDX, this is not a short term trade. I may lose another 50% or more before its over. As one who bailed on mining stocks a while ago I'd be interested in your plan if assets like RSXJ or GDX tank another 50%. Do you stop loss, bail entirely or average down/hold and ...

Re: Be Ruthless!
Good advice. As I hold the permanent portfolio longer, I realize that professional financial advice is not necessary. If we follow this idea it becomes buy low, sell high and it's all automated by your rebalancing bands. Even better that index ETFs with low MERs are advocated. I followed silver bul...

Re: Poll: Overall HBPP Performance for 2015
Seems like everyone but the US has a bleak outlook , cash is trash, and bonds don't have much more room to run upwards. I'm thinking 0-5%.

Re: Poll: HBPP Component Predictions for 2015
Bonds and Stocks and US dollar all have had quite the run up. I think gold is long overdue for a mean reversion rally, it has my bet in 2015.

Re: Mebane Faber's new ETF
Does he have a good or great record with his investing strategies? I have respect for Meb Faber's work, he seems like a smart person and has interesting ideas on his blog. I've kept an eye on GTAA mainly with the hopes that he'd beat the market , but since inception (Nov 2010): GTAA: 2.1% TLT: 22....

Re: Gold vs. gold miners
I dabbled in miners and silver on and off from 2010 until this year. It's a zero sum game. Youll get lucky in some cycles and double or triple your winners. In the next cycle youll get smacked around and lose half to three quarters of what you invested. I dont go anywhere near them anymore as temtpi...

Re: How much do you keep in cash in a regular bank account?
I think a good rule of thumb is to make sure your cash covers 1-2 years of all your expenses before building up the other three assets. It could take that long in a SHTF scenario for things to get back to normal. I agree with this ^. I keep 12 months after tax living expenses in the chequing accou...
