Re: New to PP

Welcome to the forum!  You're right, it's been a tough few weeks but hang in there, focus on allocation and not absolute losses, the overall portfolio does what it's supposed to do in the long run.

Re: How Are You Doing In PP?

Questioning past returns and guessing on future is a major pitfall , long term bonds could go to zero interest rate and you could make a fortune? equities can be irrational and triple again from here? Gold could be $700 next year, or $2500? To the OP, feeling "anemic" may be a good thing return-wise...

After a nasty December smackdown to 150 and a big run up to 220, the HUI is holding at the 180 mark as of today, anyone still buying or holding gold stocks? Any signals or signs to jump into this market?  I'm all out currently (played around between HUI 220 and 280 early last year, left with my shir...

We got pretty close to parity during the January run up, but back down it's gone. I'm gonna start keep an eye on this thing and hope to pick up some more -10% below NAV with another downleg. Re: If US stocks tank, where will the money go instead?

I think stock funds are going to flow to international stocks...the US experience has not been the global experience the past couple of years. Many markets are down 20+% from highs, generally not a bad place to buy. Interesting take regarding international stocks. However aren't most stock markets ...

Re: Canadian PP Brokerage Option? (Gosso, canPP........)

Hi Mike59! - I would only rebalance by addition and if a 15/35 band was hit.  Basically any cash or dividends is automatically used to fund the asset that is below its target weighting.  If a rebalancing band has still been hit then it will automatically rebalance everything back to the desired wei...

Hey CDNron, welcome as well! I like questrade if someone is just starting out, $4.95  per trade and zero trading costs on some ETFs, coolest trading platform of the ones I've toyed with. $40 flat fee may be steep if you're not buying every single month.... I see some disadvantages to rebalancing too...

Re: PP vs. Home equity (as percentage net worth), what's the right balance?

Is housing not similar to gold, a speculative investment with no yield , but only a monthly burden (your taxes akin to MER/storage fee?) that in the right market conditions can lead to a tremendous capital gain? Bought at an unfavorable time or market top, there are capital losses potentially?  Cons...

Re: A Way To Time Gold

The true players sit pretty when the bubbles pop because they stack gold all through the bear market.  Even Buffett took a quick double-bagger with silver in the 90's.  Andrew Hamilton at ZealLLC has articles on his page where from when he advocated buying gold in the early 2000's right before the t...

Re: A Way To Time Gold

I have a knack for finding chart patterns and timing rules that "have never failed" in particular time periods (long monthly charts going back decades), especially in precious metals (the HUI index and silver being my drugs of choice). These patterns arise after numerous spreadsheets and annotations...

Lucky for you Americans- In Canada we cannot rebuy the same fund or any tracking the same index for 30 days otherwise the capital losses are nondeductible.

There is a part of me that is a value investor. What about USO and XLE at these levels? I don't like to go all in because the price could drop even lower. Therefore, I may take a 50% position and then wait to see it they go lower or stabilize. Not sure if you're a purist-value investor or not, but ...

Home equity: 34% net worth  ( 10 year mortgage locked in at 3.5%, 20 year amortization ) PP: 51% net worth This is what jumped out at me...I'd say you have bigger things to worry about, friend.  If I were you I'd think about refinancing to, say a 15 year amortized mortgage, unless you were planning...

Reminds me of a discussion in a silver board i used to follow about mining to soon take place on the moon and other moons in our solar system, crashing silver back to less than a buck and maybe gold back below $50 . That is, if we ever really got to the moon or outside the van allen belt in the firs...

But gold seemingly going sideways/down for years now is much more difficult to handle.  Why?  How do I mentally break gold into simply another 25% asset and stop this mental stressing?   Gold down=bad day.  Gold up=good day.  Bad way to live life, esp. since the PP was meant to change that day to d...

Re: Guidance and Opinions Requested

Mike59, I assume you mean purchasing gold and raising my treasury exposure to 25%. It's difficult to add to cash and deplete to 25% at the same time  ;) I meant distributing across TLT /GLD, I would even them out so the allocation might be 23.x or 24.x % each.  As long as you're buying a lagging as...

How about option 4)
Invest asap to avoid lost investment opportunity. Do you want your troops in battle or in the barracks?!

Add to cash, bring up GLD and then TLT toward 25% (or a matching allocation higher than they are now)  until cash is depleted to 25%.

PP vs. Home equity (as percentage net worth), what's the right balance?

My stats: (accumulator in mid-30's): Home equity: 34% net worth  (10 year mortgage locked in at 3.5%, 20 year amortization) PP: 51% net worth the rest is in cash/emergency fund and cars (paid off 5+ years old, and running them till the wheels fall off) I feel like bringing up the home equity with ex...

Re: Doubt about the Gold Funds/ETFs, phobia or rational?

Thanks for the replies. As contrary as it is to purist-PP thinking, I like that I started with physical silver, at least it is in smaller denominations and less to worry about. As I added to the PP I've become Gold Fund heavy and silver is now <5% of my gold holdings. I'm thinking I'll move some of ...
