Re: What Drives Gold
Gold's price isn't simply driven by the supply-demand ratio, the dollar's movements, inflation, oil price, geopolitical events and so on. The market's way of functioning is far more complex and less transparent. Brief and brilliant summary. It climbs a wall of worry, and anything can serve as that...

Thanks for posting, nice charts and helpful insight into the price action.
I once loved these funds (including GLDX and some individual gold stocks) too much, I know better now (I think it represented a sickness, OCD?) and think I'll stay away even when they go back up

Re: Help me choose a secondary computer
If you go with a cheap laptop, for goodness sakes get one with Linux on it. ^ THIS! I've been so frustrated by every windows machine I've ever owned, I inevitably end up installing Ubuntu. Thankfully you can now smoothly dual-boot Ubuntu 14 and Windows 8, I just hit a button upon startup and bam I'...

(I couldn't see ochotona's article cause I don't have password, pardon if it's mentioned there) but a point against levered ETFs would be sheer bad luck (the sequence of returns) . Imagine a month in the red for more than half of the trading days. No one seems to talk about it, but it probably acco...

Precious metals historical data shootout + Platinum /Palladium:
My research question: is palladium (or platinum) worth a look as part of the gold component in the PP? (I can already hear the resounding "NO!" from the chorus of purists :D ) In a bout of self indulgence, I compiled year over year return data from 1970-2015 for the 4 major precious meta...

Re: Individual shares ownership vs. index funds
FYI. Brett Arends, on CBSMarketwatch.com makes a case for owning 50 individual stocks as opposed to, say, VTI. .... He suggests a better return, too. Even if a better return is identified, over what time period, and can it beat the index for decades? I love how the authors always start the study ...

Re: Miners and explorers bottomed? or another head fake?
We have so much already invested in gold instruments so why not find something entirely different to speculate in? Probably because miners have been beaten down so much more, one could expect the gains to be much higher when this market turns. Gold bullion and oil have been smacked, but not 90% off...

How much to gamble in a VP and how frequent are your trades?
I'm curious how large your VP is relative to the PP ? What about trading frequency? I've tried before with weekly/daily chart swing trading (between 5-10 trades per month) and barely broke even, I'm thinking a slower steadier pace with a monthly chart may be (a bit) safer. I'm trying to find my ow...

Re: How Are You Doing In PP?
I have been watching the HBPP portfolio for over 6 months because I am still not convinced due to the current environment. stock is sky high - waiting to dive back down to earth, back to dotcom bubble territory, not more than 10% correction over 5 years long term bond - rate is super low, only way...

Welcome to the forum! You're right, it's been a tough few weeks but hang in there, focus on allocation and not absolute losses, the overall portfolio does what it's supposed to do in the long run.

Re: How Are You Doing In PP?
Questioning past returns and guessing on future is a major pitfall , long term bonds could go to zero interest rate and you could make a fortune? equities can be irrational and triple again from here? Gold could be $700 next year, or $2500? To the OP, feeling "anemic" may be a good thing r...

We got pretty close to parity during the January run up, but back down it's gone. I'm gonna start keep an eye on this thing and hope to pick up some more -10% below NAV with another downleg. CEF is trading at similar discounts... Central GoldTrust 05:16 PM 04-Mar-15 US$ CD...

Re: If US stocks tank, where will the money go instead?
I think stock funds are going to flow to international stocks...the US experience has not been the global experience the past couple of years. Many markets are down 20+% from highs, generally not a bad place to buy. Interesting take regarding international stocks. However aren't most stock markets ...

Re: Canadian PP Brokerage Option? (Gosso, canPP........)
Hi Mike59! - I would only rebalance by addition and if a 15/35 band was hit. Basically any cash or dividends is automatically used to fund the asset that is below its target weighting. If a rebalancing band has still been hit then it will automatically rebalance everything back to the desired wei...

Hey CDNron, welcome as well! I like questrade if someone is just starting out, $4.95 per trade and zero trading costs on some ETFs, coolest trading platform of the ones I've toyed with. $40 flat fee may be steep if you're not buying every single month.... I see some disadvantages to rebalancing too...

Re: PP vs. Home equity (as percentage net worth), what's the right balance?
Is housing not similar to gold, a speculative investment with no yield , but only a monthly burden (your taxes akin to MER/storage fee?) that in the right market conditions can lead to a tremendous capital gain? Bought at an unfavorable time or market top, there are capital losses potentially? Cons...
