Re: Silicon Valley Bank Failure
Some interesting observations from Bill Ackman: The gov’t has about 48 hours to fix a-soon-to-be-irreversible mistake. By allowing @SVB_Financial to fail without protecting all depositors, the world has woken up to what an uninsured deposit is — an unsecured illiquid claim on a failed bank. Absent @...

The more I read, the more I realize how deeply involved this bank was in the whole ESG thing. https://www.breitbart.com/clips/2023/03/12/bernie-marcus-woke-silicon-valley-bank-was-more-concerned-about-global-warming-than-shareholder-returns/ One astute guy on the internet asked a very good question:...

Re: Silicon Valley Bank Failure
Hedge funds are offering to buy startups’ deposits stranded at Silicon Valley Bank for as little as 60 cents on the dollar, pitching expensive but crucial lifelines to founders unable to access their cash after the lender collapsed yesterday, people familiar with the matter said. Firms better known...

Re: Silicon Valley Bank Failure
From Jim Rickards: The behavioral and complex dynamics of bank runs and crypto runs are identical with one important difference: Banks have the Fed behind them, cryptos don't. From Tom Luongo: Lots of smoke here that SVB was a directed hit against another stablecoin and the [crypto] infrastructure.

Re: Socialism - Should we be worried
It's an unfortunate aspect of human nature that compels people to keep up with the Joneses. Before the internet and television gone wild, the biggest concern of most social climbers was their next door neighbor's new sports car. Now they have to keep up with imaginary people who do not work and yet ...

Re: Silicon Valley Bank Failure
Here is a partial list of depositors who didn't get out in time: USDC - Crypto Stablecoin run by Circle - Silicon Valley Bank is one of six banking partners Circle uses for managing the ~25% portion of USDC reserves held in cash. While we await clarity on how the FDIC receivership of SVB will impact...

It's being reported that Circle, the second largest issuer of Stablecoin, held something like $10 billion in cash reserves at SVB. https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2023/03/10/scrutiny-falls-on-43b-usdc-stablecoins-cash-reserves-at-failed-silicon-valley-bank/ U.S.-based stablecoin issuer Circle held ...

Less than 3 percent of accounts have less than $250,000? Who the heck was depositing money there?Genevieve Roch-Decter, CFA
@GRDecter
Only 2.7% of Silicon Valley Bank deposits are less than $250,000.
Meaning, 97.3% aren't FDIC insured.
Ouch.

Silicon Valley Bank Failure
From a Twitter thread from yesterday:
"Most people don't realize how crucial Silicon Valley Bank is. Billions of dollars in venture debt. Untold amounts of warrants and convertible notes in early-stage firms. If SVB fails, this could be the Lehman moment for the startup world."

Dopa Mucuna
Has anyone had any experience with this supplement? It's a naturally-occurring substance that appreciably raises levels of dopamine, the neurotransmitter primarily responsible for motivation and the feeling of well-being. Supposedly it's effective at countering depression, improving cognition and le...

Haha. You very funny.
Wasn't somebody saying that the Mexican cartels own Congress?

Today's Smackdown
There is some very good commentary going on this morning regarding today's market action. One of the more interesting theories, and one that's been discussed for a while, pits the Fed and the big banks against the ECB and the WEF/Davos crew, speculating that the Silicon Valley Bank failure is part o...

It's not just the sector bias that troubles me. The S&P 500 indices look like a bet on a small handful of popular tech stocks.

Re: Socialism - Should we be worried
When my mother was first getting started, it was common for single people to live in a boarding house. A room with a shared bath and hotplate (if allowed) was the norm. Apparently boarding houses are making a comeback as a commonsense solution to the so-called housing crisis. However, by the looks o...

Re: Socialism - Should we be worried
In a recent article bemoaning the plight of first-time homebuyers, you had to look at the underlying data to see that their affordability analysis was based on a hypothetical $400,000 home. That was a dead giveway for me. I've worked my ass off all my life and have owned two successive homes that I'...

Re: Socialism - Should we be worried
I guess it depends on your opinion of what that means. Even truly poor people in the US have cell phones, flat screen TVs and air conditioning, not to mention plenty of food, rent assistance, etc. Ya, they don't have yachts and mansions like Bezos and Zuck, but those are hardly necessities. I agree...

Re: Socialism - Should we be worried
Another factor not yet mentioned is the decline of the rule of law. You can no longer take a case to court and predict, within a reasonable margin of certainty, how it's going to come out because it's all arbitrary. The result is that investors and businesspeople cannot anticipate the consequences o...

Re: Socialism - Should we be worried
Either way, it's for the future generations to design the future, not the dinosaurs. I think Thomas Jefferson was a big proponent of that idea, that a future generation should not be encumbered or restricted by the beliefs of their predecessors. Great. By the look of things, we won't be able to cou...

I have heard the quote also, but I thought it mostly referred to changing consumer habits like the quote references i.e. Uber or self driving taxi in lieu of owning a car, renting a house vs owning, even SAAS instead of actually "owning" the software. Some of these changes are socio-demog...

On the World Economic Forum "own nothing and be happy" quote: I did some digging to try to find the origin of that and what the broader context might be. * * * In some corners that slogan is treated as their official position which it seems that it is not. Xan, it would be an equally wort...

This is an interesting, and very timely, topic. If you can't muster an opinion, or even a constructive thought about it, then why post at all?
Is this subject so threatening that it must be summarily shut down?

I dumped a bunch of VTSAX today and substituted for it about 20 individual stocks picked to roughly mirror what's going on in PRPFX and the Permanent Portfolio Aggressive Growth Fund. It's one of the few moves I've felt really good about lately. And I'm loving having individual companies to root fo...
