Re: Why do you use the PP?
there are many portfolios that are BH (no one allocation as per PP.) Way I see BH: 25% - 100% Stocks (50 - 70% for majority?) 0% to 55% Intl (20% - 40% avg?) 0 - 100% tilted (Small, Value, REIT, emerging mkt,...) Fixed allocation vs glide path Bonds Mostly total market ...

Re: Greece
Hmmm Who would have thought it? Germany conquers Greece twice in less than a hundred years. Italy started it (first time, anyways....) My father was born in Greece [although he was of Spanish decent] and served during WWII. He claimed if it was left up to the Italians to conquer Greece, we would st...

Re: Why do you use the PP?
I've never really been in nor out of the PP. After 2008 I've thought long and hard about starting a PP but in the end I borrowed some key elements of the PP and added that to my standard Boglehead 50/50 portfolio. .... Still I consider my portfolio a Permanent Portfolio. I'm 45% global stocks, 10% ...

Re: Why do you use the PP?
Little side excursion here. I have a bunch of EE and I Bonds and can never figure out how to really categorize them when figuring out what my overall asset allocation really is. They provide some deflation protection but are clearly not long bonds. They are not really cash either because there are ...

Re: If I go PP, do I still need a Cash Emergency Fund?
Cash for taxable - I think "official" is to use T-Bills, but Many (most?) keep at least part in savings accounts (online & local), CDs, - rates are better, almost as safe - just keep the account at a given bank under $250,000 to be insured (Would love to have that problem.... :) Also I...

6+ months emergency fund while accumulating
6-7 years in cash/short term reserves for retirement bucketization is where I've seen that level mentioned.

Started with gold in Aug 2012, multiple purchases over the 'years' / DCA'd in. Gold down ~15%.... Overall portfolio still up (although I'm heavy in stock / light in cash.)
So overall doing as advertised.

Re: New to PP
One other question: Anyone see a problem with using the Paul Merriman "Ultimate Buy and Hold" index funds (http://paulmerriman.com/vanguard/) for the 25% stock portion or is it more "faithful" to PP to use VTI or its equivalent? For simplicity's sake, I would suggest sticking w...

Re: TAX-LOST HARVESTING: Worth it for the PP??
The tax wash harvesting rules apply between spouses, to any corporations you control, and you can't sell at a loss in a taxable account and buy within 30 days before or after the sale in a retirement account. IRS Publication 550. Change from S&P 500 to Total Stock market (or other way) for the ...

My retirement funds are similar in my two main accounts (IRA/401k) -- 50/37.5/12.5 overall allocation. Bonds are range of LTT, Total Bond (401k), STB, a little TIPS (401k). With international / tilts on the stock side.buddtholomew wrote: ....It's 50/40/10 .....

Re: Obamacare is Repealed or 1937 Redux?
Add in a rate increase and the fools may just send us into another Depression. The Senate early Friday passed a Republican budget plan that would cut spending by $5.1 trillion over 10 years, raise military funding and repeal Obamacare. The non-binding budget, debated all week and passed 52-46 durin...

Re: How to Fix the Flawed Tilt with the PP's Equity Component
MG, Great work, the only qualm I have with implementing something like this is that adding 2 to 3 more funds feels like a big hit to re-balancing simplicity. If you find any way to implement this with less (i.e. two funds), please let me know :) I'm mostly invested in VTSAX for my stock portion of...

I don't like these days - I think bubble, bubble, bubble (boil & trouble.)
Aka, if all go up toveruse, all go down together.. But it is what it is, and I don't do anything differently, but I don't have to like it.

Re: Effect of Ray Dalio portfolio's popularity on PP?
Having Gold and LTT get such wide exposure as part of a diversified portfolio should be a positive. The AWP doesn't look that different from conservative portfolios like 30/70 VG Target Retirement Income - take 15% from Bonds into inflation/uncertainty/crisis hedges, extend bond duration to make up ...
