Re: Poll - Smartphones

I'd recommend against the Straight Talk, if anyone was considering it.  It's basically garbage.  The network coverage is limited unless you are in a major city, data is sketchy.  I just ordered the Airvoice SIM card since I have an old iPhone 3 with a broken lock button.  I don't really use data now...

I bought a Leatherman ..... Wave, I think , back in 2006 when I was at Airborne School, and have used that SHIT out of that thing ever since.  Like, use every tool on it, dropped it off the roof of an MRAP, down steps, etc etc, and that thing still works perfectly.  I don't know if some other multi-...

I'm heading to the range soon to try out my new Glock 23.  The only other pistol I've shot was an M9 (which is the Beretta 92 9mm), so this will be my first compact.  The next firearm I have my eyes on is a quality 12ga shotgun.

That's pretty fucking rad man, I didn't know I wasn't the only one trying for FI here!  What kind of cell phone service are you using?  I pay $45 for unlimited data/texts with 500 minutes.

From the point of view of someone who just doesn't want Obama to win, that would make sense, but not everyone shares that perspective.

Re: Polyphasic Sleep

Anyone try this before? Basically, you sleep 20-30 minutes every 4-6 hours instead of 6-8 hours at once at night.  Alternatively, you could sleep 2-4 hours at night in addition to 20 minute naps every 6 hours. I did this for about a year in college when I was doing a particularly difficult courselo...

Re: Big Brother Is Here: America the not so free

I just read Kill Decision by Daniel Suarez, which I found recommended on Global Guerrillas, it's a novel though.  The premise is in line with the BB theme: they equip drones with face recognition software and such so that they are autonomous, instead of human controlled.  A bit like Michael Crichton...

Re: Treasury Bond Buying Tutorial

2.  You can only buy long term treasuries in batches of $1000?  So if the "min quantity bid" was 1, at a price of 95.824, you would be paying $958.24 for that bond? It seems like you're only buying 1 single $1000 bond, but in reality you're buying a basket of 10 bonds, because the Treasur...

Hah, a vote for who a person wants in their government isn't a waste, it's how our country is supposed to work.

The second Harry Browne radio link in the FAQ really helped me understand the whole "buying your own LTTs," but I just wanted to make sure I had my thoughts in order: I'm using Vanguard. 1.  So, the yields aren't really important, because it'll even out in that you'll pay more for a higher...

IMO, the Glock is the AK-47 of handguns: utterly reliable, simple, easy to maintain.  However, I am going with the .40 S&W Glock, with the addition of the .40-9mm barrel conversion from Lone Wolf.  This way, I can shoot both .40 and 9mm.

Yea, sorry. p. 50 of semiannual report for VGLT.  "At February 29, 2012, one shareholder was the record or beneficial owner of 36% of the fund’s net assets. If the shareholder were to redeem its total investment in the fund, the redemption might result in an increase in the fund’s expense ratio...

1 party owning >50% of a fund... problem?

I was reading a Vangard bond fund PDF, and I noticed that it mentioned that some high percentage of the fund was owned by 1 party (so, I'm assuming a very rich person).  Has this ever been a problem, or is there a theoretical problem that this could entail for the future?  Like if said person decide...
