Re: Monthly Additions to HBPP
As a new PPer myself, this is something I'm not sure what the orthodox viewpoint is. My plan when adding money is to perform a pseudo-rebalance, that is, to basically buy whatever's got the lowest allocation at the time in order to bring it up towards 25%. You could also do it by splitting additio...

Re: Hard Drive Question: Why Are Laptops So Stable?
A number of laptop manufacturers have a feature like that. In general, though, it's that laptop hard drives are designed to deal better with impact than desktop drives. There are a number of ways that's done; the first one that comes to mind is that laptop drives are 2.5" in diameter versus 3...

Re: TLT - Why Is Income from Govt Obligations so LOW?
I wonder who the main investors of TLT actually are? To us with TLT in our IRA's, it's not that big of a deal, but are wealthier people with advisors really having their clients invest in treasuries through TLT and incur the state tax? Well, many folks (like myself) live in states with no income t...

Re: Daily Prayers
Of course Jesus is God. In fact, all of us are God...he is omnipresent after all. We are all part of the same (this is a scientific fact!) The notion of division between man and God, or between anything else in the universe is an illusion. We are all just droplets of water or waves in the same ocea...

Re: PP withdrawals in retirement
Firecalc looks like a great tool, but I'm not convinced that its randomizer is working properly. When I use the "random performance" feature, and click Submit multiple times with the same parameters, I get wildly different results. One time I have 100% success, and another it might be 75...

Re: Who is Mitt Romney?
I don't think we're really supposed to get too deeply into politics on this board. But to answer your opinion, creativity and vision on the part of the presidency are overrated. I don't want a guy who recognizes no limits on his own power over me to be "creative". I just want him to do ...

Re: PermPort taxable accounts - IAU
The best way is to do your rebalancing inside the tax-deferred account for the gold. In the taxable account you should have to rebalance less frequently so taxes can be put off for years at a time. Craig, thanks. My question has more to do with what my rebalancing target should be, rather than whe...

PermPort taxable accounts - IAU
Hello folks, I have a PermPort inside of an IRA, and one outside. For the one outside, I'm not entirely sure how to deal with the tax treatment. As you probably know, long-term earnings on IAU (or other gold ETFs) are taxed at a 28% "collectible" rate, not the 15% capital gains rate. An...

Re: Illogical Investing Thoughts You Hold
Hi Xan, and welcome to the PP forum! I'm not sure where this belief comes from, but it does seem common. I suppose when talking about the 4x25 PP, it needs to made clear that the four components take time to balance each other out, and grow at the real rate of return of 3-5%. These relationships ...

Re: Illogical Investing Thoughts You Hold
How about the false belief that the PP is a magical portfolio that will simply increase by 0.03% every day I absolutely believe this, irrationally. Actually I also believe it should go up by much more than that per day. :-) Fortunately I know that this belief is ridiculous, as you point out, so I...
