Re: PP-like alternative portfolio for conservative retiree
Can you generate the same chart using Wellesley and a pinch of gold say 10-20%? Here's an older thread with several charts (including the WRs) for that portfolio. If you squint, 80% Wellesley and 20% Gold looks a lot like the Permanent Portfolio structurally and acts a lot like the Golden Butterfly...

Re: PP-like alternative portfolio for conservative retiree
Any ideas? Could do a lot worse than simply using the Wellesley Fund. I'm not really an actively-managed mutual fund kinda guy, but if I had to choose 1 fund for my money I'd pick the Vanguard Wellesley fund. And it's what I recommend to people who just want to put their money in one place and not ...

Re: Historical Periods of High Inflation: Interest Rates?
My specific desire for understanding is real returns for cash accounts. When we had high inflation in the past, were savings account yielding negative 5% real return? No. Believe it or not, even as inflation in the US spiked well into double digits in the late 70s and early 80s, Tbills lagged infla...

Re: Small Cap Value index funds
It comes down to index definitions. In terms of size, here's a chart that shows the market coverage for each of the 3 indices. Note that VBR follows CRSP. https://i2.wp.com/portfoliocharts.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/cap_comparison.png?w=640&ssl=1 As you can see, the S&P Smallcap 600 cove...

I've always found that taking the time to organize your thoughts clearly enough to publish them on a website is a really rewarding way to explore the things you find most interesting. So starting one is a great idea. Personally, I use a combination of Wordpress for the site and Excel for the interac...

Re: Portfolio Charts & Hedged Bonds
Just a quick query. Was wondering how to best model a portfolio containing hedged international bonds. For example, if you live in Australia and wanted to model 50/50 Developed World TSM & Dev World IT, would setting the home country to USA give a more accurate result due to the currency hedge?...

Re: Institutional diversification (Fidelity worries)
I've personally always had the bulk of my money at Fidelity and have had nothing but great experiences with them. To be fair, I've only needed to speak to someone maybe once or twice in the past 10 years. And while I had no wait, perhaps I was lucky or they've changed over time. But I will say that ...

Re: Golden Butterfly asset location when retired with RMDs
Actually unless you are in the zero capital gains tax bracket as little as a 2% dividend over the long term wipes out the lower capital gains rates and fund turnover makes it even worse in the taxable account That's true. But it's helpful to keep in mind that the 0% tax bracket for long-term capita...

Re: Drawdown phase of a PP in retirement
So 1970 was not one of the worst outcome time frames for a retiree spending down if you are trying to find the worst outcome to measure pass or fail I totally agree. I'm not talking about only looking at retirements starting in 1970. I'm talking about looking at every retirement year since 1970. Th...

Re: Drawdown phase of a PP in retirement
That is with 60/40 and counting the time frames starting dates which were much worse than starting in 1970 for spending down in I respect your perspective, Mathjak, but the data doesn't support this statement. The difference between starting a withdrawal rates study for a 60/40 portfolio in 1870 an...

Tyler , I am not getting a paste option where you drop the code ..it is giving only a copy option where the code should be pasted Yeah, it requires a keyboard shortcut. I wish I could enable the normal right click paste, but unfortunately that's out of my control. Copy the text. Double-click the bl...

Re: Drawdown phase of a PP in retirement
Here's how I generally do it: 1. Turn off automatic reinvestment of funds and let the dividends and interest collect in your brokerage cash account. 2. During your annual rebalance, plan on taking out 1 year of expenses. If the cash that has already collected doesn't cover it, set aside some of your...

Another excellent perspective on Dalio: https://awealthofcommonsense.com/2021/03/ray-dalio-the-power-of-setting-defaults-for-optimism/ That's really good. Thanks for sharing! Ben Carlson is definitely one of the better investing writers out there, IMO. I really appreciate his balanced perspective.

And it also applies to the &...

Re: Why in the World Would You Own Dollar Debt? - Dalio
I respect Dalio a lot, but I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that he's also a salesman. You can see it all the way up in the first paragraph: These extremely low or nonexistent yields do not meet these asset holders’ funding needs. For example, pension funds, insurance companies, sovereign wealth ...

As the end of Thursday's Celtics postgame show Brian Scalabrine stated that Porzingis fits the profile of someone that Danny Ainge goes after. We shall see! It does seem like Boston could use a change, but Ainge has the same reputation among other GMs as that guy in your fantasy football league who...
