Re: First they came for the working class

Do you know anyone who uses pot? I do.  At least a dozen, several of which were close friends when young.  Not without coincidence, those who made something of their lives were those who quit using marijuana.  A couple I know of still use the drug and are now in their early 40s, have personal lives...

Re: First they came for the working class

Pot has plenty of downsides despite popular opinion. "They started at once, and went about among the Lotus-eaters, who did them no hurt, but gave them to eat of the lotus, which was so delicious that those who ate of it left off caring about home, and did not even want to go back and say what ...

Re: Republican Debate Post-Game

I was surprised that Trump referenced Eisenhower's "Operation Wetback", that Cruz's mentioned Bretton Woods and the gold standard, and that Trump and Paul teamed up when speaking against further involvement in Syria and the Middle East. I really don't trust any of them, however.  All seem ...

Re: Bitcoin On The Move Again

I bought in at a lucky time!  Hah.  Maybe I'll hold onto it this time. I bought ~32 bitcoin for $20 back in '10 or '11, but sold them when they were worth $700 total.  Regretted doing that, especially since the wife knew.  Now have 10 bitcoin after dollar cost averaging a small amount of cash each ...

Underperformance signs -- one huge thing that started popping up when gold was peaking were Cash for Gold stores.  Now I see quite a few are shuttered. Not to diverge from gold, but a broad-market underperformance sign would be the resurgence of human billboards sometime during the last decade.  Th...

Can you contribute to one in addition to other IRAs? Does this effectively give you an additional $5,500 per year of tax-advantaged space? Honestly, I don't know much about the new MyRA and was hoping others here would chime in.  I seem to recall from past speculation on the board that it would be ...

Re: Realistic "Market Timing" Backtests

Can you please sum this up for us mere mortals, MG? TL;DR is transaction costs in the past made it very unfeasible to engage in any kind of "market timing" that would be profitable today, especially with gold.  But assuming you got that under control, then you have a good chance of outper...

Re: Jeb Bush deathwatch

I don't want the government to enforce any laws. Laws would seem to be a public good if few in number, commonsensical, and seldom changed.  Such laws could help to establish habits deemed beneficial by representatives in the general public, e.g. don't rob widows and orphans.  The current tax code, ...

It's hard for me to understand how immigration can be such a hot topic for conservatives yet they coalasce around a corporate sellout like young, naive, sweating Rubio.  But maybe I'm just looking at it all too policy wonkish.... It's hard to understand why so many, both left and right, are perfect...

Re: Why the PP is better in accumulation than you think

One key point is to only check 1x per month, same day of the month. It will cause some excess trades, for sure. Small price to pay for potential benefits. But it's not a lazy portfolio. Tried rebalancing once a month when following 200 day moving averages via an Ivy portfolio in my VP and failed mi...

I'm not sure if you're asking for recommendations for a concealed carry pistol, firearms for general shooting, guns exhibiting cutting edge technology, or anything goes. In any case, if you're interested in actually upping the amount of time spent shooting, buy a shotgun and search for active clay t...

Re: Elio Motors -- Emasculating or Genius?

I can't stand disposable automobiles, or engineered obsolescence itself for that matter. Paid $1,500 for a 1992 Ford F-150 4x4 with the 4.9L inline 6 and a five speed manual with granny when it had 220,000 miles on the clock.  Now it has 310,000 miles and the motor's still never been rebuilt.  The i...

It certainly has my attention. Asian stocks were down about 3% and The DAX is off about 3.5% so far. Gold is not responding much. Flight to safety with long bonds to the rescue? Is Reub sitting on a pile of cash and getting ready to buy stuff on sale? I'm keeping an eye on the ever persistent and o...

Can someone explain the appeal of this type of structure as opposed to the regular ETF structure where people can redeem for gold (for a fee of course)? It seems like the ETFs that let you redeem for gold always basically track the price of gold with no significant NAV discount/premium. And isn't t...
