Re: What % of your PP gold is physical?

I called Fidelity for more info--here's what I've got: Gold spot price was $1,399.50 at end of the day.  Fidelity's window closes at 3:00p.m. Their price for a 1 oz American Eagle today was $1,453.  I'm assuming the commission on top of that (2.5% in band above $10,000) of $29.06 for total cost of ...

Re: Teach me about trucks and RVs

You have asked for a great deal of info to be addressed in one post, but I'll give you the basics.  Towing power needed is based on the size/weight of the trailer being pulled.  With a 5th wheel not only "pulling the weight of the trailer" is of concern, but also the weight of the front of...

Great cartoon!  Probably a bit of both.  I spend hours pondering if politicians and economists really believe the stupid things they say, or are they just trying to convince us how smart they feel they are.  Who knows................

Central Banks and gold

I spend time on another well known forum where the use of gold in a portfolio is usually scoffed at.  Most use the term "goldbug" and seem to have no concept as to integrating gold into a combination of other asset classes to provide improved long term results.  In fact discussions have ev...

Re: Intermediate bonds in a PP

There is a small logistical benefit in holding bonds to maturity, since that kind of event happens automatically and does not incur any transaction fees or bid/ask spreads. So you only need to take action and pay transaction costs on the buy side, not on the sell/mature side. The fees and spreads o...

Re: Humorous (or sad) EMail - Free House

What we have with health care reform is a program that is guaranteed to increase costs when one of the initial problems the government was trying to solve through health care reform was rising costs. I think that is intentional. Then they can come back in five years and take the whole thing over wh...

Re: Intermediate bonds in a PP

I fail to see how buying an intermediate bond fund with duration equal to a cash/LTT barbell will have any long term negative effects on the PP. If anything putting 25% in cash and 25% in LTT is the "simple" choice (mentally) because it promotes the idea that there are 2 separate economic...

Re: Intermediate bonds in a PP

Good thoughts.  I can't see any way that an Inter Treas fund or 5yr treasury bonds are going to give you the anywhere near the duration of 50/50 barbell of cash/30 yr bonds. But, that seems like the beauty of the bullet approach with Intermediates in a rising interest rate market.  Lower volatility...

Intermediate bonds in a PP

For some time I've been fascinated with the prospect of using an Intermediate Term Treasury fund or 5 yr Treasuries bonds in place of both cash/LTBonds.  Seems it would just be more simple, and back testing shows long term results very close.  Personally, I've been using Fidelity Short Term Treasury...

I'm either confused as to the question or am not understanding the OP's strategy, but why not just apply a lump sum investment into rebalancing all 4 asset classes back to 25% each?

On another thread, Gosso wrote the following: " Honestly, I see no problem with someone converting the STT/LTT to an intermediate bond holding with an average duration of 5 years.  Below are the real CAGR of a portfolio with 50% allocated to a bond fund with an average duration of 5 years (thi...

Re: Another silver question

My purpose is not to affect the performance of the PP but to just add silver to my precious metals holdings.  Let's face it, in perilous times a little silver would be much more effective for bartering than a 1oz Gold Eagle. I've done much backtesting with silver and it adds no real advantage, just...

Another silver question

I am a firm believer in not tinkering with the HB concept of the PP.  However, I'm wondering if anyone has backtested including a small percentage of silver in the gold segment.  Maybe 85/15 %. My purpose is not to affect the performance of the PP but to just add silver to my precious metals holding...

That's strange on the OP's link to the gold dealer reviews for Tulving.  Either great or terrible, nothing in between.  I bought from him a couple of years ago and had great service.  Sad, because his prices are great and I was going to buy again after first of year.  Any other good dealers other th...

Re: Gun suggestions

Excellent advice in all the above posts.  To the OP, a lot may depend on your skills and experience with handguns/rifles.  For reliability and ease of use I would have to go with the .357 revolver and a good high capacity shotgun. My reason being reliability.  You are just not going to have any fail...

MT, I tend to agree with you but like Pointedstick brings out many of these mass killers don't meet that profile.  Now, among the gang members and street criminals, I'll bet 95% meet that profile, and I feel most of those factors of violence you mentioned are part of their taking up that lifestyle. ...

Re: Trying to understand...

While it does appear that there has been a rampant increase in mental illness, I really wonder if it is actually more prevalent than 50 years ago, a time when these mass shootings were almost unheard of. I don't know about other states, but up until the mid-eighties we had quite a few large state me...

Re: buying treasuries

Well, that's the attitude I've always taken in buying treasuries.  I just want to get it done.  It was my intent to buy at the current price regardless.  I guess my question stems from lack of knowledge of market trading, maybe relating more to equities than bonds. I can't imagine a sell order (for ...

buying treasuries

I'm in the process of building a treasury bond ladder in my VP using Fidelity's bond desk.  Because of the small bid/ask spread in shorter term treasuries I've always just put my order in as a "market order".  Should I be entering these as a "limit order"?  Is there a remote poss...

Re: Money Market funds may not be safe

Fundamentally speaking, a money market fund isn't really composed of money — nor is a bank account for that matter. Money Market Funds are just lines of private credit (as agency debt, mortgage backed securities, commercial paper) on a piece of paper with a dollar sign next to the amount that is su...

Dealers reporting coin sales?

Pardon if this has been discussed before, but when bullion coins are sold back to a dealer is the sale reported for tax purposes?  It is my understanding that American Gold Eagles sales (any quantity) are NOT reported to the IRS.  Regarding Krugerrands and others, reports are filed on sales of 25 co...
