Gold goes up

It’s pretty interesting that it takes $1900 to buy a yellow metal coin today that cost 35 dollars not too long ago. It feels like a safe asset to put in the portfolio.

I believe Portfolio Visualizer shows that VTI and VOO track each other very closely.

Re: Permanent Broker

I'm also interested to know what you don't like about the Fido website as I think it's great. I just felt like the site was a little clunky and busy compared to other brokers like Schwab and etrade. But the customer service is excellent. I’m think Fido may be the winner and they have a lot of physi...

Re: Lower Spreads Versus Greater Divisibility: Which Do You Go For?

If I can get a low premium I always prefer the smaller amount (1/4 or 1/10) but 1oz coins work as well. Also I love combibars. That’s the best of all worlds.

Re: Lower Spreads Versus Greater Divisibility: Which Do You Go For?

Paper gold (low spread gold funds), converted to physical gold after a good year (PP up +8%, physical gold coin spread 4%, convert paper gold to physical gold and count it as a +7% up year. That way it feels like 'other peoples money' covered the spread). For ongoing adjustments (rebalancing), add ...

Re: Permanent Broker

Is it easy to see purchase history IE price paid date of purchase and current price. And are you able to sell specific shares? The reason I ask this is - say they have been buying VTI for 25 30 years and each purchase starts a dividend reinvestment machine of its own. This will become a monster to m...

Permanent Broker

I want to set up a stock account for my kids where we auto purchase and manually purchase mostly stocks mostly VTI and reinvest dividends. I want this to be broker that they can use forever. I’m looking for things like ease of use, customer support, on-site locations, etc, etc… Currently I am thinki...

Re: Tim Price discussing the HBPP in the current economy

One big take away for me is that commodity trend following (CTA) is very interesting. One CTA I follow is up 30 percent in the past 12 months. Which I think is a general direction of a lot of the CTA’s.

Basically it seems like they are zigging when a lot of stuff is zagging.

Re: 2022 Returns

I just looked and I am down only 6.8 percent from the high on 3/22. This is after gold has started to move. Now I may need to rebalance! I may be close to even year to date.

I checked and the one year return and I’m down only 1.3 percent.

Direct Indexing

I heard a very interesting comment by Burton Malkiel. With direct indexing they can buy a select group of stocks that tracks the index but if a stock is down the direct indexer can sell it and buy another stock similar to tax loss harvest.

Re: Are most people here sticking with Treasuries?

I bought 30 years at 4 and then again at 3.87. I am using a new rule for myself. It’s called go halfsies. If I’m scared to buy or sell I do around half. That gets me moving.

Also I would argue that the PP is balanced to deflation as well. Long bonds and cash.

Re: Tim Price discussing the HBPP in the current economy

What resonates with me and seems reasonable is another simple formula. Precious metals, value stocks, and commodity trend following. The CTA's seems very interesting to me, because they are market neutral. I have been following one CTA and were up 37 percent last year, net of fees. The only reason I...

Re: 2022 Returns

One thing I am proud of is that I worked up the courage to purchase 30 year treasuries recently. One interesting thing about the PP / GB is that it makes you confront financial behaviors. I was talking to a friend and telling him that your body physically will not allow you to step off a cliff. Tha...

Re: 2022 Returns

I haven’t looked, but did anyone hit any rebalance bands? I did on my gold when it spiked to 2k but I did not follow the rules! But I’ve been pretty good since. One way I have been able to force my reluctance to buy losers is to “go halfsies” if I need to buy / sell something, I give myself license...

Re: 2022 Returns

Don’t have the one year performance offhand but I I’m down about 12 percent from the high on my modified GB. That’s vs 31 percent of the peak on my stock only portfolio. I think my 1 year performance was more like -13.9 but its a modified GB with a tech heavy mutual fund thrown in. No small cap val...

One more thing. I think the NYT is basically garbage. I cant even put on my rotation because every time I go ten words deep into an article I have the overwhelming urge to throw it in the trash.

I just heard from a friend who said their 36 year old brother in good health died suddenly. I am wondering if I should talk to them about this film.

It may be too painful for them and not helpful.
