Re: Google Duplex
Sam Harris, a neuroscientist who is mostly known for being an advocate for atheism, has a TED talk in which he reveals that he believes an even greater threat to humanity than religion is artificial intelligence. I watched the TED talk but don't remember whether he watched this video about the robo...

Re: Freedom
I took a sabbatical of about 2 years at around the same age as you and I would recommend it for everybody if you can do it. In my case it was a combination of both being burned out by my work as a software engineer and the death of my wife after a bout with cancer. I didn't have enough money to reti...

Re: There seems to be an advantage to Roth conversion now until 12/31/2025
As I am getting reasonably close to retirement, I have visibility as to what my future tax brackets might be. Based on the certain return to the old brackets on 1-1-26 just months before my 65th birthday, I am highly likely to benefit from Roth conversion. All of the reasons you state are fine, but...

Re: There seems to be a huge advantage to Roth conversion now until 12/31/2025
If I were ever going to do a Roth conversion this would probably be the year for it. Next year I turn 70 and will start collecting both SS and taking RMD's from my IRA. Obviously this will result in a significant increase in my income. The way I figure it, if I send the whole RMD to the government ...

Re: The Intellectual Dark Web: A home for heretics of all stripes
I tend to think that all attempts to get human beings to think alike are destined to fail. As evidence for my assertion I offer that it is now 2018 so Orwell's vision of 1984 is at least 34 years off (or did it happen, and we didn't notice - a debatable proposition). Interesting point. 1984 did hap...

Re: Trump as tragicomedy
I think Trump should pardon all the U.S. citizens that have already been indicted by Mueller's team (Manafort, Flynn) in this so-called "Russian Collusion" investigation. As for the Russians who were indicted, everybody, left and right, seems to understand that was a toothless joke any wa...

Re: The Bond Dream Room
These are the times that try men's souls. Or maybe not. I vowed not to look at my portfolio for a year back in January and so far I've been successful. Funny thing is I know that almost all of the long bonds (held directly) I have in my portfolio still have a higher yield than what shows up on the t...
