Re: How to counteract sitting at a desk all day (For Moda, TennPA and others).
Some doctors are so stupid it's not even funny. What do you think your knee is meant to do? It's meant to bend. If you don't use it, you lose it. Sure you need to make sure that you are doing it properly; otherwise you may hurt yourself. From what I've read, most exercise physiologists seem to a...

Re: Senate Report on CIA Torture
You ought to be shocked that our former illustrious leader, George Bush, allowed torture to happen on his watch, and he ought to be ashamed. We are supposed to be the good guys. There is never any excuse for an official state-sponsored torture program. That's supposed to be stuff for the bad guys...

Reub,
Do you remember the movie scene where Luke finds out that Darth Vader is his dad? Every time you post some irrelevant comment about Obama, I picture you having a DNA test and finding out that Obama is yours.

Re: Newbie implementing PP in India
You live in an enlightened place. In the U.S.A., investing more than 3% in gold is a big no no. Whether you can achieve financial independence with the PP depends on your savings rate versus your spending rate. You probably have a better chance of reaching independence with the PP than with most o...

Re: Setting Up a Brand New Permanent Portfolio
You won't be able to use Treasury Direct for your retirement account (unless I'm way off base); only for your money held outside of a brokerage. Regarding insuring physical gold, be aware that there is a specialized insurance company that offers much better rates than your standard insurance compani...

The house also gives you some exposure to real estate investing, which is lacking from the four PP asset classes.

Re: Setting Up a Brand New Permanent Portfolio
If you have safety concerns with your present living situation, then you probably need a safe deposit box for personal papers, etc., even if you don't put physical gold in it. But do yourself a favor and start accumulating some physical gold anyway and put it in the safe deposit box. Even if you j...

Here's the previous thread:

I interpret that as saying that rebalancing gives you a better chance of a higher CAGR than not rebalancing.

Re: Permanent Portfolio Without Rebalancing
Someone posted a graph maybe about six months ago that showed that about 90% of the time rebalancing had boosted returns by 0.5% or more. That seemed like pretty good evidence that rebalancing usually boosts returns, although there is no guarantee. Does anybody else remember that thread enough to b...

Re: abortion discussion
Those who want abortion legal call themselves pro-choice. The choice ought to come prior to impregnation. Act responsibly and you won't have to worry about abortion. In other words, wait for marriage to have sex, and even then use birth control until you're ready for kids. Today's society wants ...

Very well said. You really captured the point of holding 25% gold right there.rickb wrote: The point is not to keep up with the Joneses. The point is to have a portfolio that more or less keeps up in normal times, but will preserve your accumulated wealth even if the Joneses are absolutely crushed.

Re: Climate change science is settled
I think 97% of scientists may agree that the earth has been warming lately. Whether they agree that humans are a significant cause of the warming is another question. For me, it's certainly still an open question. It seems to me that the earth has gone through many cooling and warming periods thr...

I'm with you pp4me3. I've got better things to do than trying to read tea leaves to figure out whether the guy slightly to the left is less corrupt than the gal slightly to the right. At this point, the bureaucracy is so big and so entangled with big business that all we have is just an illusion o...

We homeschooled our son through 8th grade. He just started at a public high school this year, and he seems to be fitting in well. Believe me I wondered how it would be for him, but it's a smaller charter school, so not quite as intimidating as the mega high schools. Our daughter is in 5th grade an...

PS, interesting comment on the 60/40 allocation. I of course disagree and I'm sure there is a significant BH following that would consider the comment ludicrous. It's hard to de-program those who have been brainwashed. Their religious fervor blinds them to the lack of diversification present in a ...

Re: 130 Years of 60/40
What many would call a very conservative portfolio, 25% stocks and 75% bonds, doesn't always work very well. On average, the CAGR is around 5%, but you'd better be saving up when the CAGR is over 5%, because you're going to need those extra funds in those times when the CAGR is less than 5%, someti...

Re: PP now beating SP500 YTD
I used to have a fair amount of money invested in the Dodge and Cox Balanced Fund. Seemed like a reasonable thing at the time. Just for fun, I just looked up it's performance on Yahoo for 1/1/2000 to 10/8/2014 (the last 14+ years). If I did the math right, the CAGR was 3.03% (I'm not sure if the ...

The support doesn't necessarily come in lockstep with the declines. Give it a little while to show up. I like to use peaktotrough.com, focusing on the line showing the overall PP performance and including say a decade of history along with recent results. The PP doesn't always go upward, but the ...

The CAGR for the S&P500 from 1/1/2000 through 10/8/2014 was 3.44%.
For the period 1/1/2000 through 1/1/2010, the CAGR for the S&P500 was -1.41%. Talk about a lost decade.
I'm very happy to have found the HBPP.

Hitler was a problem when he started invading other countries.
