Re: TIPS vs. the PP Barbell or iBonds: No Contest

My contention that there is asymmetric risk in the decision to allocate one's fixed income in nominal bonds, such as TBM, or inflation-linked bonds, such as TIPS. With individual TIPS held to maturity , their real return known with precision at the time of purchase. There is no risk to the future b...

Re: PP YTD performance - was it the worst ever?

Really? I thought it was the real CAGR for someone who has held the PP for 9 years. I thought that is why there are a lot of negative years in the one and two column, but none when you go far out. Because if you hold the PP for a long time, historically, you always get in the 4-5% real CAGR range. ...

What's your favourite restaurant in the whole world? One of my favorite restaurants in the world was always the Burger King in the Hong Kong airport. It was nothing special on its own. But after spending multiple weeks in mainland China, the opportunity to have a generic American burger with import...

Enlightening. I've read several Harry Browne books and do not remember reading this. Maybe I read it but did not retain the concept. Was this in one of his books? If so, which one? Or is this something he said or wrote elsewhere? That's from "How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World". Highly recommen...

FYI -- I published a new post today that reviewed portfolio returns in the first half of 2022, and it included a section on this topic. Does anyone here know if there is there any program (either free or not super expensive) that can do something like the Clone Stamp tool in Photoshop
Try Gimp. It's a free, open-source alternative to Photoshop. And it includes a clone tool.

Re: Backtesting the PP all the way to 1971?

Thanks for the info on this. I wasn't aware of the ability to start before 1970; from what it appeared on the website that was the earliest possible start date (the grey blocks on the Excel spreadsheet always were shown as starting at 1970 or later). I have PM'd you regarding a good potential sourc...

Re: Backtesting the PP all the way to 1971?

I admit this qualifies as a shameless plug (and I promise not to make a habit of it), but another option is to try one of my new standalone backtesting tools . You'll have to supply your own source data, but the individual PP asset histories aren't too hard to dig up and you also have control over t...

Re: Backtesting the PP all the way to 1971?

Hmm... It's interesting that PV doesn't have more LTT data than that. It's a terrific tool, but the way it automatically changes the start year is always kinda frustrating. You can rarely actually compare anything apples-to-apples. For the record, I set the gold return for 1970 on PC to 0% since the...

Re: Backtesting the PP all the way to 1971?

While it uses simple annual rebalancing rather than bands, Portfolio Charts has the data coverage you're looking for (back to 1970). Here's the dedicated Permanent Portfolio page: https://portfoliocharts.com/portfolio/permanent-portfolio/ And here's a tool where you can adjust the percentages of the...

You may also want to eliminate redundant portfolios (10% stocks has the same impact if it's in the first or tenth section) to increase efficiency. Out of curiosity, I spent a bit of time working out the full set of solutions. With 4 asset options to fill 10% chunks of a portfolio, the number of pos...

Re: Correlation coefficient finding software or website?

Another way to approach the problem is to constrain it enough that it's realistic to model every possible solution. For example, instead of looking at hundredths of a percent try looking at 10% intervals. A portfolio could then be broken into 10 sections, where each section could be filled with one ...

Re: PP-like alternative portfolio for conservative retiree

Can you generate the same chart using Wellesley and a pinch of gold say 10-20%? Here's an older thread with several charts (including the WRs) for that portfolio. If you squint, 80% Wellesley and 20% Gold looks a lot like the Permanent Portfolio structurally and acts a lot like the Golden Butterfly...
