Re: Big Mickey is Watching

Technology driven imagineering BS, there's no underlying problem being solved here. My Disney 'experience' consisted of toe curling unease that I endured for the sake of the kids. Planning ahead for months, having some random stranger call my kids by their first name and the ability buy tat with the...

Re: Glassholes at Work

Reminds me of those mics/earpieces that were all the rage in a few years ago. Started off with hyper-busy people being conspicuously connected all the time, migrated into retail and now, well you don't really see them anywhere. In thirty years time I see some archeologist routing through a rubbish d...

Re: Parenthood

[] Becoming a parent did terrible damage to my skepticism of genetic determinism.. I recall in my teens my mum making a cryptic comment along the lines of "having kids is like having your faults paraded in front of you" didn't know what she meant until I had kids myself. As much as anythi...

Re: Location Independence

The entire world is Americanizing.  Same shit, different country.  The inner space is much more important now than the illusion of physical freedom. To be fair to any Americans on the forum I'd say Corporatising, rather than Americanizing, it's an evolutionary dead end but dinosaurs were around for...

Re: Protection against a sharp drop

I have been in it over ten years and it has been very good to me... I kept in there rebalancing. Just out of curiosity what rebalancing method have you used over the 10 years ? In 3 years I've seen some sharp drops but have yet to hit a 15/35 band, I kind of feel I'm missing out on any rebalance ad...

Re: What are some good personal finance books esp. considering the UK system?

Here's a fairly recent roundup of UK focused investment books. http://monevator.com/weekend-reading-christmas-gifts-to-buy-the-should-be-investors-in-your-life/ I've found most of the UK ones to be very dry technical tomes. I did try to read the often recommended Tim Hale book but found it somewhat ...

Re: Crawling Road blog post - Permanent Portfolio Performance and Historical Returns

Simba's backtesting excel spreadsheet has more portfolio (inc PP) ratio's, charting and comparisons than a sane person could need.

If you can think of it it'll do it, I seem to remember it was pretty straightforward too.

why not focus instead on offering some value to society in the form of a successful business and generating a profit instead, but whatever I suspect his business of demonstrating the principles of personal sovereignty and financial independence offers value to society, probably generates a tidy pro...

Alphabaskets: Gold fight, Who wins, Who loses

http://alphabaskets.com/gold-fight-who-wins-who-loses-whats-really-important-about-gold/ The permanent portfolio calls for 25% in gold but that exposes the portfolio to a tremendous amount of volatility, more than most clients probably want. To the extent gold is a diversifier for equity exposure, ...

ETF replay has the PP for 2013 down -2.0% and Gobal beta down -.88% for the whole year of 2013.  Gobal beta started in May 2013 so since inception it was down -2.9%. I am following this on paper.  It has 62.5% in income producing bonds.  Thanks, I stand corrected, the blog post read as if it were t...

Saxo's balanced portfolio turned in a similar result (-2.9 %) to the PP. http://www.tradingfloor.com/posts/global-beta-29-percent-loss-2013-books-closed-605844721 You'll recall that it's based on a macro model like the the PP but uses a more complex engineered asset mix.  The most obvious point of d...

Re: sold s&p 500 today to rebalance

OK, so LLT's are below the 15% allocation, correct? No they're at 25%, I'd rebalance if I hit a (non cash) rebalance point. I've been uncomfortable with all the assets classes this year, so accumulating to cash. Would have been a smart move if I had a trigger for action, but sometimes I have to see...

I rebalanced one month again. Every cell in my brain says: don''t. But it has works very well in the past. Just keep to your strategy. It is the hardest aspect of investing. I seem to have adopted a "rabbit in headlights" strategy this year, not good but not (yet) bad either. (Cash is way...

Re: Anyone using Mavericks? (Mac OS X 10.9)

From 6 months ago I think you'd be hard pushed to see any difference at all. Finder has tabs, dual monitors are better supported and the nasty (or not) linen, leather and paper textures are gone. I was a bit slap dash about upgrading, didn't backup or clean up. Everything came back after the upgrade...

Re: Linux [was] bugging the crap out of me

Chrome OS has evolved to the point where it's piqued my interest, however google has evolved to the point that I view chromebooks as prototypes for government issued computers. I'll just wait till they issue me one and filter out unsafe sites for me. Ubuntu though has evolved to the point that I put...

Re: Should €-Investors hedge Gold against $?

You should be buying physical gold. Not ETFs, and especially not some hedged ETFs. Also, many countries have small equity markets, less reliable governments for bond allocation than US government, and so on. I'd rather go with a Bogleheads portfolio in such countries... Reading through the Icelandi...
