SS & the PP
Does this make sense? "Bogle also suggests that, during the retirement distribution phase, you include as a bond-like component of your wealth and asset allocation the value of any future pension and Social Security payment you expect to receive." So... If you worked out the 10 year bond e...

Re: The Secession Thread
It would be inhumane to send our convicts to the communist country of Australia with their gun control laws and national healthcare system. Surely you can't be questioning Chairman Dan :o https://en.uncyclopedia.co/wiki/Daniel_Andrews In all seriousness, has anyone here watched the documentary on t...

Re: The Secession Thread
I thought all states in the "United States of America" had the right to leave the union (even if Lincoln didn't agree). No issues from a Aussies viewpoint except for 1. It would have to be a large majority vote to leave in the state. ie NOT 51% to 49% 2. Some mutual defence pact may need t...

Welcome to the forum Pors. I see this is your first post. :) Short answer to your query. Gold hedges US bonds better than bonds from other countries. Let's follow Blue Ruins suggestion and run a simulation on portfolio charts. Pretend you are living in Spain 1. USA PP but with Spanish currency (cas...

Thanks Tom,
If I am understanding you correctly, gold reserves are not mandatory "but" it gives a country options it wouldn't otherwise have .

So why does the US have (supposedly) gold reserves if they are not necessary for the currency. Canada has no gold reserves now.

Re: Wealth Transfers
The US dollar is undoubtedly the strongest fiat currency in the world right now. However, considering that the US has defaulted twice in my lifetime 1971 , 1966 and once in my grandparents’ lifetime 1933 , I don’t consider US currency immune to default. If I held convertible notes (and I do) and th...

Re: Solar as an investment
A high SEER AC system and very through weatherization of the house probably would pay back faster than your solar project. Great point. I think this is the path I’ll follow first. +1. Also in Aus, they dropped the rate the electricity suppliers pay you for excess power fed back into the grid..... o...

Re: Wealth Transfers
Dollars are not wealth. Our property, capital goods, consumable goods, homes etc. are wealth. Our time is what we use to create more wealth. By giving other people dollars, the government gives them a claim on our wealth. Hmmm... On giving that some thought, I would suggest the dollar gives a claim...

As part of the inheritance from my wife's uncle, we took our portion of his brokerage account as is, with the positions. So we now own some corporate bonds/notes, most of which mature in the 2025 timeframe. I decided to keep them because they were paying anywhere from 4 to 7% interest (Union Carbid...
