Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

In Ontario, golfing is still prohibited. Even though the premier acknowledges that it's safe, he says well, the golfers will get together and drink, and we can't take that risk. Sucks to be a golf course owner up there, two summers in a row. Wow. Here in progressive Illinois, the courses are open to...

Blue IL is 'reviewing' CDC guidelines and figuring out how to change guidance. Why? They should just say okay we're done, but they refuse. I think they are saying they will follow the national recommendations. They are saying it, but not doing it. What is there to review? If you are 'following the ...

Cortopassi, Republicans taking out their own i.e. Cheney because she is not representing their views is not the same as Ds forcing their views on everyone else. I was once taught that you can lose money in your life and always get it back. But once you trade your principles, they're gone forever. I...

Re: PP-Inspired Portfolios

Wellesley is not as tax efficient as a two fund mix using an index fund for the stocks. I’ve deferred a ton of taxes over the past 12-15 years since I switched all our taxable stock allocation into vanguard index funds.

We do use Wellesley in an IRA. Love it there.

The PP isn’t for people who check the markets and their balances every day. Sometimes I go months without knowing what the DJIA is at. The PP has done about what I had hoped, over the long run. Maybe not yesterday (so I gather), but I couldn’t care less.

Re: Thoughts please: cancel culture and my book club

I grew up in a rural public school system. Haven't read Vanity Fair, never heard of it actually. so what's the troubling part of it?

Also, I think the best approach is to tell everyone that if a book makes them uncomfortable, they should sit that one out.

Re: I think it’s time to move into crypto

Bubble getting bigger. I saw someone offer crypto classes on nextdoor which is a neighbor hood social media site. That must mean all the old housewives will be trading crypto soon. The fact that people have to take classes to try to understand it, argues against its success. If you think about the ...

Yeah that's a sign of something.

One good result of crypto mania is that way more people know what fiat currency is and why it matters.

I think I know how you're achieving this "don't know anybody" thing. You've tried it here multiple times: you ask whether anybody's sick, or knows anybody who's sick, find some reason to discount whatever answers you don't like, and then bingo the result is that nobody's sick! To be clear...

Re: FBI Seizes Contents of Hundreds of Safe Deposit Boxes in Beverly Hills

I saw the news awhile back, and while still disconcerting, the key differentiator here is that the facility ran anonymous deposit boxes. I've checked out places with anonymous boxes in Las Vegas, Fort Lauderdale and Vienna and the Vegas place has been raided multiple times and since shut down. Like...

And whenever I read about a "cabal of globalists" or something similar, I remind myself just how difficult it is to get even a few people on the same page. Amen brother. I can't even get my family to agree on a restaurant choice. The best name for a restaurant chain would be “I don’t care”.

Re: Permanent Portfolio concept continues to live on

There should be more choices for newer single family homes that are less than 2000 ft but are nicely built in decent places. My wife grew up in a prosperous suburb in a 1200 ft 3/1.5/2 car garage ranch house with a basement and a nice yard. I thought it was just right. There were no big splashy room...

Just out of curiosity, what percent of voters in your county are registered D vs. R? It’s getting close to 50/50. Bush Jr got 70% of the county vote in his elections. But Romney dropped to 64% and Trump to 55% and 51%. An influx of Californians has changed the political landscape a lot. Wife and I ...

The statistics may not show it yet, but rents are rising aggressively in desirable cities.
Where? Not doubting, just asking because the impression I've gotten from the housing market is that the bidding wars are fueled by people leaving cities.
