Re: My new book is free on Amazon until Friday
Thanks guys! Kshartle, just to let you know- you don't actually need a kindle to get the ebook. You can buy kindle books and read them on Amazon's free Kindle app which is available on pretty much any platform (e.g. on your PC, Mac, phone, tablet, etc.). Amazon stores your kindle purchases on their...

Podcast review of A Random Walk Down Wall Street
Here is a 25m podcast I did about the Burton Malkiel's famous book A Random Walk Down Wall Street . The podcast includes a comparison between Malkiel's advice and Harry Browne's suggestions of the Permanent Portfolio. Re: modified pp + open blog about it
Welcome, cyclesguy!
Have you considered treating your mining shares as your variable portfolio rather than modifying your PP? The end result would be the same for now, but going forward your choice to trade mining shares would be independent of the rebalancing you do within the PP.

Re: Physical Gold Price on Yahoo Finance?
Thanks so much for all the helpful suggestions guys! Somehow I missed the fact that there had been responses on this thread until now. CA PP, your suggestion gets the quote perfectly from Yahoo and I thought all I would need to do is convert my holdings to ounces for iBank to update. However, iBank ...

Physical Gold Price on Yahoo Finance?
Does anyone know if there is a way to get the current price of physical gold bars expressed in GBP per kg on Yahoo Finance? I'm using the iBank personal finance app (for mac), which will automatically downloads stock quotes but only if it can search Yahoo symbol lookup with http://finance.yahoo.com/...

Re: Rebalancing triggered?
I run a UK PP and I am probably about to hit a rebalance band for stocks. I am waiting for 35% and not jumping the gun. Last proper rebalance was summer 2011 when I sold gold (how times have changed!). However, I did have a semi-rebalance in 2012, which was triggered by administrative changes. Long ...

The raffish charm of fundamental indexing
Traditional market cap indices struggle to defend themselves against the accusation that they bloat up on overvalued equities, mechanically shoveling in more of the hot stuff like a compulsive eater – especially when the market is frothy. In contrast, fundamental indices are meant to break this imp...

I'm with you in your skepticism of treasuries. That's why I have large variable portfolio deficient in LTTs and loaded up in gold. :-\ I seemed to know what you do now a few years ago... In August 2011, I was forced to rebalance out of gold when I hit a rebalancing band. I hated selling gold whe...

Re: The 5th Pillar of the PP has arrived!
Looks massively bubbly to me too, especially in the last hours. Perhaps the new buyers don't remember the correction in 2011, or care. But even after any corrections, it looks to me like bitcoin is here to stay. That means we have an international, non-fiat currency and we have 100% reserve banking,...

If Bitcoin adoption continues we'll have to rethink the PP
Yes, yes I know: someone is always saying we may need to rethink the PP. And I realise that Bitcoin is in a bubble, there will probably be a frightening correction. Granted. But adoption is increasing fast and that really is significant. It seems to me that with a market cap of over $1bn, Bitcoin is...

1) Gold. PHGP or similar. I could use something like BullionVault but to be honest I'm not really sure it is better than an ETF. There is the geographic diversification thing to consider. If you are in the UK then Switzerland is relatively close and it's easy to buy gold there. Craig has some recom...

As far as criteria go, UK Government issued was the only thing that seemed important to me. I just chose UK government bonds with maturity dates at around the same time of year to form the ladder. I've actually done a 3 year ladder, but same difference.

The article in the OP is by a former Treasury Department economist- i.e. an economist who worked for the State, just like Keynes did. It doesn't surprise me that his perspective is that Keynes had noble motivations, nor does it surprise me that he believes that it is very important for economists li...

You could get away with it using German bonds, but it is not a robust solution. I did an interview with Marc De Mesel, who runs a European PP blog http://europeanpermanentportfolio.blogspot.co.uk/ and using German bonds is the solution that he goes for. He talks about the rationale behind his imple...
