Re: Treasury Notes (Auction vs Secondary - basically a wash?)

From what I've read, there is no real difference between buying US Treasury Notes (2 and 3 year durations) on the secondary market versus in auction. With auctions you avoid bid/ask spreads and get the best price everyone is paying...but you lose a few weeks of interest while waiting for the auctio...

Re: US Legislative Majority after November 8

I like divided government. Reigns in the crazies on both sides. Effectively adding more reams of paper to existing state and federal code and regulations isn't necessarily a good thing. I used to believe that way until Executive Orders started becoming so commonplace. I also don't like executive or...

Re: How did YOU vote???!!

I have seen other explanations thrown out. Maybe the predictions of a Red Wave made Rs lazy and not motivated to show up. Or maybe that got Ds out to vote. And some pollsters claim the polls never predicted a Red Wave and that was a narrative created out of nowhere. The interesting thing is that ev...

Re: How did YOU vote???!!

Not a great night for the R party. Thoughts on my thoughts? - If you want to win a competitive Republican primary in a deep red state, go for the Trump endorsement - If you want to win a competitive general election, having his endorsement is close to political suicide Interesting take. As fanatica...

Re: Corporate Bonds

Because these higher yielding corporate bonds tend to default more frequently, isn't it better (or at least less nerve wracking) to just stick with investments backed by the people with the printing press? I mean, those higher yields are there for a reason, right? If a bond portfolio of near junk co...

Re: IBonds over the limit - Gifting

Just gifted but stuck to a 10k per person. I may just turn around and convert the gift in January. That's the way I am leaning as well. It's been great to get some more 9.62% I-Bonds but I don't like that it adds a level of complexity that my wife is likely to struggle with if I pass. Trying to kee...

Re: Mosler on current inflation...the MMT response

Only watched the beginning of the Mosler video doodle posted so can't comment on most of it. Anyway, Mosler seems to start off every piece he does with a premise that, at least for me, just doesn't jive with reality. Specifically he has this idea that the government more or less arbitrarily imposes ...

Re: IBonds over the limit - Giting

My wife and I just gifted ourselves 20k each. No brainer, since the money will at least make 9.62 for the next few months! Technically that $40,000 doesn't make anything over the next few months because of the way the three-month "redeemed before five years" penalty comes off the beginning of the f...

Re: Cash as an inflation hedge

Personally I am laddering treasuries at 3, 6, 9 & 12 months. That has worked well, I guess, though I am (obviously) always behind the curve. Will wait a bit longer before extending those maturities. I think going anywhere out to where the yield curve begins to dip the wrong way (IIRC around the 3 y...

Good article confirming Tyler’s view that cash is greatly under appreciated as an inflation hedge. : https://www.morningstar.com/articles/1099412/cash-as-an-inflation-hedge-revisited?utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=linkshare&utm_source=link So long as it is understood this is relative. Could I trouble you guys for some help? I just opened a Treasury Direct account. After receiving an account number, I went to the "Log In" page. Re: I Bonds’s new variable rate will rise to 9.62% with the May reset

With the CPI data out this morning, TipsWatch has the new variable rate for 11/1/22 to 4/30/23 at 6.48%. Link is here: https://tipswatch.com/category/i-bond/ Thinking I may add to our gift box positions before 10/31 to get the current 9.62% for six months. And then, obviously, 6.48% for another six ...

Re: TBills as "the best horse at the glue factory?"

Why do BHs love them...they eliminate inflation risk which is a HUGE benefit. And yet I see that iShares TIPS Bond ETF is down 17.78% YTD. And yes, I get that the performance of a fund is different than buying a bond and holding it to maturity. Still, that just looks to me like another asset that i...

Re: 75% stocks and 25% goldo

If we eliminate the worst dates where 4% failed which pretty much if you run from 1970 on that would , then a withdrawal rate for 60/40 would be about 6.50% .so not very stressed as far as outcomes go . The worst retirement years to have retired are 1907 ,1929, 1937 , 1965 and 1966 so starting in 1...

We are retired and don’t use a fixed inflation adjusted draw . We use bob clyatts 95/5 . It uses actual balances . Each year we get the higher of 4% of the actual balance or 5% less then we took the prior year if it is a down year . Which ever is higher . Firecalc has a tab for using 95/5 Jason, Di...

Re: Dollar Milkshake Brent Johnson throwing nod to Permanent Portfolio

Yeah I hear he does say real estate instead of long bonds. Probably not a bad portfolio either. Probably not but definitely not comparable to a PP. I tend to look at real estate as a combination of maybe 50% hard-asset inflation hedge with the other 50% being a prosperity tilt. So no deflation prot...

I should have put 'super spreader event" in quotes as that was my friend's term. Not that I was agreeing with him. I was posting to describe my symptoms and asking is it (highly) possible that I just have a cold? The same type of things that I have experienced for years? That it is not at all covid...
