Re: FDIC risk
I don't think we expect anything but gold to be worth much it a SHTF scenario. I don't have really any qualms about FDIC insurance, regardless of the 2009 law. The government didn't even let people's car warranties lapse when GM went under; there's no way they won't make good on FDIC insurance.

Re: Bonds and IRAs
If your marginal tax rate is 10% or 12% in 2018, then a Roth IRA seems very attractive. If your marginal tax rate is 22% or more, then the decision gets harder. You have to forecast what you think your tax rate in retirement might be. But again, you need to compare your current marginal rate agains...

Re: Figuring Out Religion
It sounds like burnout was a sad result of: a) "decision theology" - the idea that it is up to you to decide to be a Christian, and b) emphasis on personal experience - as you have indicated and shown, such things can be induced Mountaineer and I (I think I'm speaking correctly here for Mo...

Re: Bonds and IRAs
Sounds like you've learned a lot already! As far as Roth vs traditional, for the most part it's a bet between your current marginal tax rate and your future overall tax rate. Note that marginal tax rates are typically higher than overall tax rates, so that favors the traditional. Another thing is th...

Re: Krugman on taxes
tax policy toward the rich should have nothing to do with the interests of the rich, per se, but should only be concerned with how incentive effects change the behavior of the rich, and how this affects the rest of the population. . . . Or to put it a bit more succinctly, when taxing the rich, all ...

Re: Trump as tragicomedy
I’m shocked. I had no idea JacksonM was a Muslim woman! I have only a high school education in grammar. How could I have better said what I did to indicate I was not the Muslim woman I was talking about and avoid the confusion? Sometimes there's not really much that can be done. And just because so...

Re: How to calculate average maturity including cash?
Allen,
I believe maturity would be calculated correctly if you used zero in the formula you gave. You're right that "that part" of the formula will always be zero, but the amount that's zero will be the percentage of your portfolio that's in cash. That's exactly what you're looking for!

A belated Merry Xmas and happy new year to you, Budd. It's not belated; Christmas is twelve days long, starting Christmas Day. There's a song about it and everything. Fair enough. O0 So are you celebrating the other eleven days, beside the partridge and turtledoves and whatnot? Well, the tree is up...

Re: Figuring Out Religion
I disagree. Just because you don't believe in organized religion, or any God for that matter, does not mean there is no meaning or purpose to life. Meaning and purpose is what you make of it. Well, a couple of things on "Meaning and purpose is what you make of it": 1) This is a religious ...

Re: Figuring Out Religion
If there isn't God, then there is no right or wrong anyway. I don't understand that statement. The 'Golden Rule' is a good place to start. My kids, like Corto's, were raised in a non-religious setting, but clearly know the difference between right and wrong and are very moral individuals. I am not ...

Re: Figuring Out Religion
So you are saying we pragmatically have organized ourselves into societies that have determined what is right and what is wrong and those beliefs may no necessarily jive with God's right and wrong? If he made us in his image, I would think that what we've organized ourselves into is a pretty decent...

Re: Figuring Out Religion
I agree that right and wrong can be learned without religion. Is there an absolute, objective right and wrong? That's much harder, right? Is the death penalty a good example? Death penalty is I assume against commandments. So anyone following the bible is 100% against the death penalty? For someone...

Not at all scolding here, but it's worth noticing that the Lively exit fee kept many of you with them long enough for them to respond. In retrospect, you may be glad that fee exists, and also by staying you're rewarding them from having the fee, even if you wish they didn't.

Well, you said, quoting me: Most importantly "This is all about something much deeper and more important, like what our situation is as human beings, how should we treat each other, is there such a thing as objective right and wrong," I agree 100%. I just did not need religion (personally)...

I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing, Corto. I'm asking what your source of objective morality in fact is, not how you learned what you currently believe to be right and wrong. What is the foundation of your belief of what's right and wrong? What is the source of your objective morality? ...
