Re: Signal-to-noise ratio problem
This isn't the 100% gold portfolio forum, is it? 10K in 1975 to now, in various strategies and max drawdowns (rounded): S&P: 681,951, 55% 60/40: 632,746, 27% (annual rebalance) PP: 290,747, 18% (35/15 rebalance) Bonds: 290,263, 32% Cash: 79,283, 0% Gold: 61,126, 70% So no dou...

Re: Signal-to-noise ratio problem
we are up 200 right now on the dow . the pp is at a loss because gold and the pull of long term bonds killed it . Let me do a little historical revision, same quotes, but from last Monday, August 24th: ------------------ We are down 600 right now on the Dow and gold is flat. The PP is at a loss ...

Re: PSA: I now have a 3-year period with no gains
Who the heck here should be happy, whether in a PP or some other ratioed asset holdings right now? At least year to date, NO ONE. All are down. About 3.5 to 5.5% currently. Except the cash portion. So does anyone want to really be 100% cash? Sure, we'd all like to be in cash right now if the cr...

Permanent Portfolio Real World Perspectives -- Concept
Hi, All: I am asking for opinions on the potential success of putting a book together (Kindle/ebook or real paper) that takes some of the gems of back and forth discussions on the PP that have happened on this forum over the years and compiling the best into a book. Imagine 2-10 page sections, each...

Ahh, DS9. I have watched the entire series I think 3x. My favorite Trek series. I like the darkness and the characters. Got a bit hokey in the last couple years with all the prophets stuff, but otherwise great.

Re: What if Gold drops to $300.00 per ounce?
I have gathered, Tech, that you have a good amount of gold! :D But lost it in a boating accident... I think my opinion would be that there are people who will not ever see the value of gold, and will either not look at the PP because of it, or try to modify it so gold is a lower percentage. I am no...

Re: What if Gold drops to $300.00 per ounce?
Gold to dollar fixed until Nixon in 1971. Does that not explain the period before 1971 for the 1900s? In nominal terms, I assume that means gold was flat with the dollar up to that period, except for the devaluation by Roosevelt in 1933. So any period prior to 1971 for gold, as it behaves now, is ...

Re: PSA: I now have a 3-year period with no gains
Tyler, if I am understand the chart correctly, the blue is looking back from a starting point of 1/1/2015, so basically the 60/40 has killed the PP for ~7 years, and if starting back from 1/1/2012 the PP wins for the past 16 years? And for both lookback periods, anything back more than about 17 year...

Re: PSA: I now have a 3-year period with no gains
Very good point, Cortopassi. How does the PP to 60/40 comparison look if you use the time period of 1/1/2001 to today? Personally, I don't even really want to get caught up in the historical backtesting. I know you have to, to some extent, but intuitively the uncorrelated assets with rebalancing s...

Re: PSA: I now have a 3-year period with no gains
Looks like we are all recovered in the market. Nothing to see here, nothing to worry about. 45 degrees to the upper right forever. Sure, PP gains were half of 60/40 since 2009. And a lot has to do with your timing entry into the PP if you went all in at one point in time. But, with a historic ral...

Re: PSA: I now have a 3-year period with no gains
The greatest bull market in history has been barely strong enough to result in portfolio gains. From 3-2009 to now, PP returned total of 63%, 7.8% CAGR 60/40 mix 143%, 14.7% CAGR 100% stock, 211%, 19% CAGR I would have been more than happy with 7.8% knowing all my eggs were spread around more evenl...

Re: PSA: I now have a 3-year period with no gains
To me, this points to a good near bottom marker for the PP! Does anyone really think we can continue like this for another 10 years of near zero rates? Of stock market corrections taking only a couple days and then a couple days to come right back? Of the Fed still having bullets to prevent/delay/...

Re: Black Monday
Smaller drawdowns are the most compelling feature for me of the PP diversification. You can say rebalance will shorten things up, but that's if you successfully made it through those terrifying drops in 2001/2008. I made it through the first one because I was oblivious (maybe I should have stayed t...

Re: PSA: I now have a 3-year period with no gains
Stocks plunge, gold and treasuries are flat. Stocks plunge again, gold and treasuries decline. Stocks rally, gold and treasuries get demolished. See the pattern? I know...its only a week, blah, blah, blah. Same crap, different day. Been that way since 2011. Peak to trough, from 1/1/2011, CAGR of 4....

Re: Black Monday
nope but it was a whole lot less volatile and did have less losses although the pp lost ground from that point the last 2 days . but it still did not lose as much . of course when the recovery happens in equity's i will guess and say i do expect it will happen before my hypothetical pp shows a ...

Re: No where to hide
Since getting in the PP in March 2014, at this moment in time I am now pretty much at 0% return for 18 months in. I will say that I have had less stress during that time period and looked and worried about the market much less. When we are talking the market moving 300+ points daily, it is difficult...

Re: No where to hide
And this is where I get disgusted with gold yet again. Dollar down what, like 1.5% yesterday with no rise (even a small loss) in gold. However, today, dollar up and gold getting hammered. I guess I still expect to see it below 1000 before any meaningful rise. Seems appropriate that a dip like tha...

Re: Black Monday
I am quite shocked the markets closed where they did. Will be interesting to see what happens to China tonight. At least 75% of the portfolio was basically even comparatively. I would have liked to see gold do a little better, but maybe all the margin calls are causing the drop for now. Who knows...
