Re: Hedging Against U.S. Dollar Losing Global Reserve Status
Seajay, thank you for your excellent comments. I found them very helpful, and I share many of your views. You mentioned investing in US land/home, global stocks, and gold. As a followup question, what about US bonds or global bonds? Did the prudent British investor have any of his/her money in bonds...

Hedging Against U.S. Dollar Losing Global Reserve Status
We run pretty much a Golden Butterfly portfolio. We hope to retire in a few years. We don't really need any growth in our portfolio to make retirement possible, but we don't want to lose out to inflation and a little real growth would certainly help. My wife and I will have some pensions and Social ...

Re: How much to save for retirement
Sophie, Thanks for the helpful information you've provided here. You mentioned it's important to hire aides privately and not through an agency. I'm not clear on this terminology. When you say an "agency," are you talking about some kind of government agency or do you mean private agencies? For find...

Re: Simplifying fund choices for the PP/GB
Kevin K, you identified one thing that I'm not comfortable with, which is too much active management and corporate bonds in the Rollover IRA. I think this might be a better plan for the IRA: 10% IAUM (paper gold) 45% VBIAX (Vanguard Balanced Index Fund) 45% VWENX (Wellington Fund) With this idea, th...

Re: Simplifying fund choices for the PP/GB
I've been thinking about how to simplify things for my wife to be able to handle when I'm gone and still keep some of the benefits of the PP/GP philosophy. She's a smart, professional-career woman, but she doesn't have a lot of interest in maintaining financial stuff. I can teach her how to handle t...

Re: Why do they say gold isn't a hedge against inflation?
British perspective since 1793 for 50/50 US$ invested in US stocks/gold. Where when gold was money (Sovereign gold One Pound coins pre 1930's) its assumed that they lent that gold (money) to the state, as a form of safe keeping of their gold coins - which in return they were paid interest. From 193...

Re: Stock Picking in the PP
That's my question, though, is whether it fits in with the HBPP mentality. He seems to be saying to pick stocks with high risk/reward for better rebalancing opportunities. Would HB say to put all your stock allocation into SCV rather than splitting half and half between SCV and LCG? Or is there some...

Re: Stock Picking in the PP
Do you think splitting up your stock allocation into half total stock market index and half small cap value index is a move in the right direction in terms of Harry Browne's philosophy of using volatile stocks with high beta? Of course, this is the Golden Butterfly strategy, but of course each perso...

Re: The Peter Schiff portfolio: an evolutionary offshoot of the PP
So the only portion in which you have gold is the income model?
I try to keep my gold at 15-20% myself. I agree with you it's a great diversifier and insurance asset, especially if you hold some physical. I just recently upped my physical amount, and I feel very good about that.

Re: The Peter Schiff portfolio: an evolutionary offshoot of the PP
mathjak107, I noticed above you said you rebalanced out of short-term bonds and gold recently. Do you have a fixed percentage (or range) of gold that you keep in your portfolio? Or does your target gold percentage vary based on some factor(s)? Just curious to get your perspective on this. I like to ...

That's the point here. Just because they couldn't have a little foresight to see that flirting with NATO was going to bring huge problems their way, doesn't mean that we should be shipping weapons over there to try to bail them out at the last minute. ... I would like to point out that the people who make these memes seem to want to have it both ways. Other times they want us t...

This is reality: the time when they should have been fighting for their independence was for the last 15 years. Tell it to the Ukrainians. What's the sign that people like to post at their desks? To take the Canada analogy a bit further. Let's say the French Canadians are now in charge of the government, and while they are getting in bed with China, they are mistreating the English-speaking Canadians.
