Re: Restless Leg Syndrome
MT, "There is also the option of coming up with some more robust coping skills, right?" Sure, it is possible. The advantage you have is that your body is giving you feedback so you'll know if you are sucessful. "To a degree, I think that the problem is with me. I don't think that th...

Re: Restless Leg Syndrome
It's not good for the soul ... There is clearly a distaste for some of the things that happen to me mentally when I'm at work, Given your words, you are clearly in a job which is toxic for you and your body. You even have your own experimental control i.e. sitting at work yields pain, sitting simi...

Re: Restless Leg Syndrome
So you're saying it happens when sitting at work, but not at home in a very similar kind of chair? You could do a trial and bring your home chair to work, or vice versa, but if you are really sure of that (and you may want to try to be sure), than you are absolutely correct: "I'm sure there is...

Re: Lies, Damned Lies, and Medical Science
Why do you think Tylenol is bad? The papers MG posted were case reports and animal studies. It is "hard on the liver". Don't even think of taking alcohol if you take it. I don't have any references well aside from the fact that tylenol poisoning will destroy your liver. Here , the cl...

Re: Restless Leg Syndrome
MT, This is a weird entity which I haven't encountered (in terms of helping people) often. How long have you had it? What was going on in your life in the 3-6 months prior to your getting it i.e. were there any major life stressors? (these two questions produce significant clues more often than yo...

Re: Lies, Damned Lies, and Medical Science
I don't know which is worse, but I agree with MG that tylenol is bad. Drink tons of water if you take NSAIDS and don't overdose i.e. no more than 2400 mg/day but really try and take as little as you can get away with. I personally try to avoid taking any pain killer and have some alternative stuff ...

Re: Trying Out a Low-Carb Diet
Here's a critical review of the merits behind a low GI diet: "It's Time to Let Go of The Glycemic Index" Overall, these studies do not support the idea that lowering the glycemic index of carbohydrate foods is useful for weight loss, insulin or glucose control, or anything else besides co...

1. Gumby, Eating low glycemic carbs means I can have cooked barley as part of b'fast because it is low glycemic index, whereas I could not have that many carbs on a low carb diet. As to whether eating low glycemic index is sufficient, or whether most people would be better off avoiding that many ca...

What you're talking about here is how to optimize your health by applying the same zeal with which you have optimized your financial lives. You might be better served by looking elsewhere, such as chiropractic. Benko, am I correct in guessing that you are a chiropractor? I am indeed a radiologi...

How do you know when your adrenals are trashed? I have been exposed to many stressful and exciting events over the last 41 years. I may have trashed my adrenals without even realizing it. Re: Trying Out a Low-Carb Diet
Guys, Jobs was following what sounds like a macrobiotic diet, which I make no claims for and am NOT recommending, but has many people who advocate it for cancer patients. It is a super restrictive diet. Whether it helps because of the content of the diet itself, I don't know. I suspect not.. HIn...

MG 1. reference on blood levels of ubiquinol vs ubuiquinone Here's one: http://iospress.metapress.com/content/2555q517442p006m/ I don't think Kaneka would risk their reputation on formulating a huckster product. That reference uses people all who have congestive heart failure. These people per the ...

COENZYME Q-10 Powdered ubiquinone (the original version) is poorly absorbed. My recommendation was therefore to buy it in gelcaps with oil in the cap which dramatically increases absorption. ALternatively there are numerous companies selling their own special higher absorption form, many of whi...

Re: Trying Out a Low-Carb Diet
1. Thanks GUmby! Great information. I would wonder if there are still people with "gut issues" who might still do better after a trial of avoiding foods high in these, but I suspect what you said would solve most of the problems for many/most people. Soy has other issues e.g. phytoestr...

Safflower oil is an omega 6, which are generally not recommended (given the unfavorable ratio of omega 3s to omega 6s in most peoples diets i.e. most people eat to much omega 6 and not enough omega 3 as it is).Pointedstick wrote: What about Safflower oil? 1. There is no one optimal diet that is right for everyone . GEt sufficient protein and play with the amounts of carbs and fats to see what your body " likes" (keeping in mind 2). 2. Whatever one thinks of carbs, lentils, beans, certain grains (I use barley and slow cooking oatmeal) i.e....

Gumby,
It is not that well publicized, but statins can CAUSE memory problems.
Also anyone taking statins should be taking 200 mg coenzyme q-10.

"Good Calories, Bad Calories" I have not read, and can not speak to, but some very smart people (in the area of diet, etc) trash Taubes based on this and his more recent books on diet so I will withhold judgement. If you look up Good calories, bad calories on Amazon, and read the 1 star r...

If you have not seen it, this ancient article from 1995 is still very worthwhile reading Epidemiology faces its limits, By Gary Taubes http://geography.ssc.uwo.ca/faculty/baxter/readings/Taubes_limits_epidemiology_Science_1995.pdf since it explain that limits of what one can conclude e.g. most epidi...

Links to really good threads would be helpful, though finding the boggle ones and some of the more recent ones here (and of course the FAQ here) is straightforward.
