Re: Golden Butterfly Portfolio

Short term treasuries in the EU have a negative yield. We have "bank loans" that provide a couple of percent interest (at the cost of not being allowed to use it for a year or two). Can I use that for the GB instead? Or do short-term treasuries provide some special behavior that is essent...

Re: Golden Butterfly Portfolio

When I tried the allocation on Portfolio Charts using 25% each SCV,LT,ST,GLD I got a BL-LT return of 5.3% vs 5.5% for the GB and 4.2% for the PP as you mentioned. Its quite interesting that the PP using SCV went from a BL-LT return ranking of 14 to 3 I think 25% each SCV,LT,BIL,GLD goes to 5.0%? I ...

Re: Golden Butterfly Portfolio

For those interested in a prima facie comparison, here's an SCV tilted Permanent Portfolio (in blue) vs the Golden Butterfly (in red). How is the data you are using different from PortfolioCharts? Here the baseline LT return for the GB is 5.5% versus 4.2% for the PP: https://portfoliocharts.com/por...

Re: Golden Butterfly Portfolio

Just a quick query regarding the USA Golden Butterfly and the PP As I understand it, the GB share allocation is expanded by adding SCV to take advantage of "prosperity" which is the most common economic climate. I found that using the standard PP and with 25% SCV instead of TSM (and 25% ST...

Re: Going to be hard not to tweak a bit this January

But I read parts of Rickard's book as well, and he advocates 30% cash, which helped convince me I need to raise my cash level. Why does he advocate such a large cash component? And regardless, is his record as a prognosticator any better than the other gurus who are wrong at least half the time? Yo...

Re: Do you buy land and houses/apartments or pavillions to rent ?

You may wish to research Marc Fabers asset allocation. https://mebfaber.com/2015/06/01/chapter-8-the-marc-faber-portfolio/ It's been a while since I have listened to him, however a few years back he was purchasing land in SE Asia. He doesn't use REITS, so rebalancing may be an issue for small portfo...

Re: What is your current portfolio?

The very first investing book I ever read was the Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham, Buffet’s mentor, which has a section IIRC correctly concerning someone who just doesn’t want to get into value investing/do the work etc. For this kind of investor he recommended a 50/50 stock/bond portfolio....

2 hours of confirmation bias for goldbugs :) Natural human skepticism has to be shut off when it comes to passive investing. Not sure what other areas of life are similar. This video really isn't about gold, although it does touch on it. This guy is not a goldbug, either: he doesn't know whether go...

Re: Jim Rickards new book is an interesting read - almost PP like

Is it US-centric, or global in its narrative? Or is it rather about applying principles? Great topic, by the way. I love me a good book review. What little I have read, it seems to be global in its coverage. Rickards thinks the current system will change due to the debt, and offers several guiding ...

Jim Rickards new book is an interesting read - almost PP like

Hi All, Just reading a book called "Aftermath" and thought I would post a comment. Was most interested that Rickards believed that we would be entering a long term low growth environment over the next few years (assumption - not very PP like) and given that, a barbell portfolio should be h...

Re: Time to Return to the Gold Standard?

Tn, With respect, you are just flat wrong on several points concerning paper money. Financial crises were far more frequent in earlier times and usually more severe on average. Additionally, very few economic crises have anything to do with money per se. They are almost always caused by something m...

Re: Wonder how the PP acts in this scenario....

It's purely supply and demand. Meaning as you go down the list, demand is higher? Why on earth, for example, would Spain's bonds be more attractive than US bonds? Demand is only 1/2 of the equation. The EU is in a strange situation where it is easy on the monetary side and pursing austerity on the ...

76 minutes? I would need an executive summary. :) I think it's too long as well, however -- in the first couple of minutes, he refers to a debate he had with Christopher Joye: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQuKMsmVq5c It's about 25 minutes long and very fast paced. What I like, is that both sides...

Interesting Economics talk. Note how a slightly wrong assumption destroys the model. The PP, relying on fundamentals, looks even better now compared to more complex asset allocation models. Also note the reference to Contrarian Investing near the end of the presentation https://www.youtube.com/watch...

They have a similar thing to the FDIC in Australia, but there's a catch. The Deposit Guarantee is activated when a bank fails "but" if the newly legislated "bail in" is activated and the bank is saved, then since the bank has not failed, the deposit guarantee is not activated. Ne...
