Re: Price updates when owning bonds directly
Thanks guys. I don't plan on checking daily or anything, but since I just made my first purchase for the PP it's cool to watch the non-correlation at play.

Price updates when owning bonds directly
Silly question : I bought my bonds through the bond desk at fidelity. Am I seeing an up to date price for the bonds when I look at my portfolio through fidelity or is delayed a day?

Yes I bought the amounts based on cost not face value. I did the Spartan index for Stocks and IAU for gold. Thanks for answering, makes me feel better.

Please review my order:
Today I implement the PP for the first time. I used my Fidelity account to by LTT and STT (1 year, no ladder) directly. For some reason I was really nervous that I did it wrong so I'd love for someone to just tell me I bought the right thing. LTT says : Buy 912810RK6 UNITED STATES TREAS BDS 2.50000%...

Sounds like speculation to me. Do this in the VP. When your 20% stop hits, short the index as a full or partial hedge inside the VP and cover when your ready.

I don't care about nominal returns. I only care about real returns. nominal returns are important too. think of your pay check. you can't control everything about your expenses in life but what what at least helps you plan is a consist pay check that is usually enough to exceed inflation . by havin...

Now you are shifting the goalposts. You didn't say, "The duration should be 18 years based on average maturity but is 17 because of securities lending." Your exact quote: "the average maturity is 27 years but duration is only 17 years... the fund acts as if it is a much shorter type bond fund be...

Re: Talk me into selling my gold miners.
Welp, after the past two huge down days I had 85k in losses. I realized about 70k of them and them today. I kept just enough as a VP so if miners rebound I won't feel completely stupid. Putting some stop losses in them though. On the plus side I paid off my mortgage today. So now to implement the P...

I'm horrible with excel but I'd love to have a simple spreadsheet to plug numbers into. Does anyone feel kind enough to share a template on here?

The day I plan to liquidate my mining stocks this happens. I'm not sure if Ill look back in 5 years and say it was the dumbest thing to sell here or the best thing ever. There goes a years salary because I wanted to outsmart the markets.

Re: Talk me into selling my gold miners.
Thanks Cortopassi. What really erks me is GTU and CEF. I was buying those at a premium and they've tanked worse than the metals themselves, now trading at a negative NAV. Even gold stocks that only own good don't behave like gold if they are a closed end fund! I liquidated my Europac account last we...

Re: Talk me into selling my gold miners.
I would keep it. Just about the time you feel like puking, average into some more shares. Eventually miners will come back. I own none myself so it's easy for me to give advice with someone else's money, but I'm strongly considering averaging into some GDX leaps Iv felt like puking for about a mont...

I'm having a real mental problem realizing my 70k loss in gold miners to raise funds for the PP. I can't friggin believe it.

Re: Tax loss help
Sorry I should have clarified. The losses are as an individual, but I do own a business as an LLC. I am starting another small business this year, if there were a way to have that income come as capital gains couldn't I use the losses in the individual investing account to offset them?

Tax loss help
I own an LLC filing as an s-corp and have about 70k in unrealized losses in an old portfolio. I'd love to harvest the losses but I don't have any gains elsewhere to set them off against. My CPA kind of sucks right now. Are there any strategies for taking the losses and maximizing the write off?

I'm in a situation where I could most likely retire by age 38. I'm currently making over 6 figures in my LLC So taxes kind of suck right now.

Roth vs Traditional
Iv always been told that a Roth option was a no brainer for retirement accounts. Then I reward this forum and heard otherwise. I understand that it is situation defendant, but can anyone point me to a definitive read on the topic, in this forum or otherwise? This bankrate calculator seems to put a t...

Re: Go full in or pay off mortgage?
No one has mentioned that after you pay off your house you can always take out a mortgage again if you suddenly needed the money.
Mortgage origination fees are a little less than 1 year of interest so if you make it longer than that you'll come out ahead ceteris paribus right?

Re: Go full in or pay off mortgage?
I have about a $200k mortgage at 4.25% and close to $1m in the PP nearing retirement. No way I am going to pay off the mortgage. If I intended to live in the house during my retirement years I might think differently but I have no such intention right now. I want the money. Screw the house. Right n...

I have 25 years left on the mortgage, so I I gut not be getting a big deduction. I'll have to check.
Tyler, great tips. The 20% rule does feel about right.

Re: Go full in or pay off mortgage?
There would be no capital gains tax that I'd have to pay to get the money. I understand that a high inflation environment would be a plus to carrying a mortgage. But that assumes that the PP makes larger gains than the inflation rate, then I pay 30% tax on those gains. What was the PP actual rate t...

Go full in or pay off mortgage?
I've read the old posts on this topic, but I'd love to know more about the pros and cons of paying off the mortgage. I have 750k liquid and owe 189k on a 4% mortgage. Bankrate has a nice calculator which gave me an effective rate of 2.8% after mortgage interest deductions. So it's a guaranteed 2.8% ...

I didn't expect this thread to end up with exploding heads haha I'll say this for anyone who feels like they are missing out the stock market gains: the people who are stock heavy aren't selling, and you probably wouldn't be either. When it turns and takes a dump they will give it all back. I did it...
