Re: Golden Technology Portfolio

Resurrecting this thread to share this WaPo article and to suggest that perhaps instead of holding QQQ maybe just replace some or all of the SCV in the GB with TSM, since our COVID 19 world seems to be doing a fine job of turning the the total market into a landscape entirely dominated by megacap t...

Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

The lockdowns were reasonable at the beginning, when it was about preventing hospitals from being overrun. That is no longer an issue and hasn't been for months. I truly don't understand what the rationale is now. WiseOne, my attitude is exactly yours, but the mantra has started again, if the rise ...

Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

Another related thought - I went to a party last PM given by members of my division for someone who is leaving to take a director position elsewhere. Everyone at the party was either an MD or a nurse practitioner, and all of us have spent time in and around COVID patients. I expected to hear and se...

Re: Where would you move?

I live in one of those North Texas Suburbs. People are moving here in droves but personally I don’t see the attraction. The weather is terrible. It is 10pm as I write this and the temp is 92 with a “feels like” of 100. The “feels like” during the day is 111 and that will last until October. North T...

Re: Where would you move?

There's a big jump in people suddenly freed from the need to live in expensive, crowded areas by the shift to remote work, which is now becoming a permanent trend: https://www.wsj.com/articles/when-workers-can-live-anywhere-many-ask-why-do-i-live-here-11592386201?mod=djem10point All told, at one po...

BSV for cash portion

https://investor.vanguard.com/etf/profile/BSV What would be the downsides to using the Vanguard Short Term Bond Fund for the cash portion? It is 67% in treasuries with a 2 year duration. It held up well in 2008 and so far this year in comparison to a Treasury only ETF like SHY. And over a 10 year pe...

Re: The Elephant in the room: How should we prepare for the collapse of the US?

Marc DeMessel(?) covered what happened to the PP in Iceland during the GFC. Gold did not increase in value to cover the losses in the rest of the PP. https://www.thepermanentportfolio.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/PP_Iceland_2003_2009_Purchasing_Power.gif From the article " Permanent Portfoli...

Re: Schools and Covid

The other concern is I am going to assume within a couple weeks of kids returning, some number will start testing positive. Then what are these schools going to do? I am very afraid that I am going to get my 10 year old all ready to go back to school and see his friends and then 1 child will test p...

Re: Stock Indexes Seem Busted. 20% in 4 stocks

Serious question: does it matter for a PP investor? If you are investing in US stocks as an asset class then don’t you just want to own what everyone in the market is buying regardless of whether it is 5 stocks or 50?

Question on the media

Wondering everyone’s opinion on this. I think conservatives have always argued that the media has a liberal bias. But for the most part the media tried to appear neutral. This seems to have changed dramatically with Trump. When I open my computer each day no matter what newsfeed appears (MSN or Bing...

Re: The tech-dumbell portfolio

I am VERY drawn to a portfolio of cash and gold right now along with paying off all of my existing debt. The PP has served me well. And I am well aware of the money lost over the years thinking "this time is different." I didn't think this time was different in the tech bubble nor in 2008....

Permabear Portfolio Ideas

If one were going to make a permabear investment portfolio, what would it consist of? Obviously gold. Maybe Swiss Francs. Any other safe haven currencies? I know Libertarian666 does something along the lines of 66% gold, 17% cash and 17 Swiss Annuity. Any other ideas for such a portfolio?

Re: An outsiders perspective of the politcal turmoil

If the Democrats gets into power, the best outcome is a civil war in which they are completely vanquished. The worst case is tyranny that will make the Soviet Union look pretty good by comparison. I don't want this question to turn into a partisan thing, rather one of just observations or opinions....

Re: An outsiders perspective of the politcal turmoil

So the last few posts before mine have compared the Democrats to terrorists/fascists that scare a lot of people and are out of tune with the average American. However, as of today Biden has a double digit lead over Trump in the election polls. So does the avg American really agree with the Democrati...

This is really what America is like these days ladies and gentleman. Aren't you all just itching to move here??? Actuall...

Re: An outsiders perspective of the politcal turmoil

Then I have to ask all of the Trump/right leaning people here: You just know Trump, and probably Pence want to call bullshit on how things are being handled. So why is there a vacuum of leadership there? Why do they defer to the task force, then either openly or covertly defy them? Why not decide t...

Re: An outsiders perspective of the politcal turmoil

The news and entertainment media and personalities are completely going along with this. I would guess that some of them would like to dissent, but they don't dare. I hate to be one of those people that blames the media for everything that goes wrong but in this case i do think they shoulder a LOT ...

Open End Mutual Funds vs ETFs

I have been using ETFS for my 4X PP. However, I have recently opened an account at Fidelity and I see they have some open-ended mutual funds that have even better expense ratios. They have a new Total Mkt Index with 0% expense ratio and a long Treasury mutual fund with a .03% expense ratio. It seems...

Re: Investing Twice Monthly Into PP

Yikes! Do you suppose that ANY of them remember the subprime mortgage crash of 2008? I don't doubt that they are all well-educated, but forgive me for questioning if they are well-experienced. Why would I care if they have a memory of the subprime crash? I only invest in the PP. So really I only ne...

Re: Investing Twice Monthly Into PP

Can you auto-invest into ETFs? I thought you could only do that into mutual funds. If you can set up auto-investment and there's no transaction costs, I say have at it. I had done simulations quite a long time ago, and that method of contributions performs the best - ignoring taxes. Something like ...

Investing Twice Monthly Into PP

I run a basic 4x ETF PP. Since we can now live on my spouse's paycheck, I am going to put all of my paychecks into the PP when I get paid twice a month. With the advent of brokers like M1 Finance, it is easy to just buy the 4 ETFS in equal $$ amounts each time I get paid. Is there any advantage to d...

ARKK-Ark Innovation ETF
XITK - SPDR Innovative ETF
XT - Ishares Exponential Technologies
IHI - Ishares Medical Devices
