Bingo. He's just another peddler of fashionable intolerance. Actually, he died a couple of years ago of throat cancer so he's not peddling it any more. I was a Hitchens fan in my atheist years, but could always see that he was more of an entertainer than a serious thinker. He was sort of the Michae...

Re: Figuring Out Religion

Perhaps this view will be helpful. Let us say that I have 66 photographs of an old barn. One question that could be asked is whether I have 66 photographs of the same barn or 66 photographs of 66 different barns. In either case, each photograph will show me something different from the other photog...

Re: Figuring Out Religion

This 7 minute Youtube by Bart Ehrman succinctly nails the reason why I eventually rejected Christianity altogether while still trying to retain some of it. Speaking of Osteen: http://babylonbee.com/news/seminary-now-offering-degree-celebrity-pastoring/ Pondering: Is jail a physical thing? A state of mind? Being trapped in false illusions? Unable to see truth? Lack of faith? For Paul, I think it was just plain old jail. But perhaps you are speaking in ...

Re: "Mother Teresa"

Christopher Hitchens wrote a book about Mother Teresa called "The Missionary Position". I have only read excerpts but suffice it to say he didn't think too highly of her. He was even asked by the Vatican to be the "Devil's Advocate" against her Sainthood but I guess he didn't mak...

Re: Figuring Out Religion

The recent comments, including those in the original article, are interesting. It seems people in general are somewhat more motivated to escape something (fear of whatever) than moving toward something that is appealing (like or love of whatever). Humans are indeed fascinating. Perhaps that is why ...

Re: Figuring Out Religion

"The ability to let that which does not matter truly slide.” it all seems to be so fear based.. you fear death and non existence so you believe in eternity, then you can't wrap your mind around that, and that gives you phobic anxiety :o .... and all of it is firmly in the unknown.. nobody know...

Re: Hermine

Yes, the potential may be worse in the more Northern latitudes as Hermine reintensifies and then is blocked by a high pressure zone (like in Sandy) and spins for days in virtually in the same place. But hopefully not. Looks like it's going to intensify into a hurricane but then make a hard right tu...

Re: Hermine

My first month of retirement has turned into a month of nearly endless rain which has been kind of depressing but other than that, can't complain. Are you suffering from a tropical depression? Up here in central CT I think most folks are just hoping for a good rainfall. Rain has been in short suppl...

Just lots of rain and wind here near Tampa. My insurance company forced me to put on a new roof back in July and I'm kind of glad they did now.

Re: This Guy Studies Man Caves for a Living; Here’s What He’s Learned

Since I got forced into early retirement a month ago while my wife is still working I have been establishing my man cave. It's the whole house. I've taken up all the cleaning and cooking and everything but the laundry which I will start doing eventually. At first she didn't seem to like it very much...

Re: Figuring Out Religion

The Bible is not revelatory to me and I perceive no "promises of God" (which is an oxymoron, but that's another subject). Why is it to you? Why did it used to be but isn't any longer for curlew? Why did it used to be for curlew but isn't any longer? I have asked him that a couple of times...

Re: Where should I open new Roth IRA accounts

I recently realized I can fund Roth IRAs with some of the proceeds from my home sale. As I have read, holding TLT in a Roth IRA is a good idea for rebalancing. But is their still concern about the structure/exposure of TLT? 24,000 Dollars would be contributed in 2016-17. There must be something abo...

Re: Figuring Out Religion

Can anyone pinpoint the origins of the concept of eternal damnation? I can tell you where it didn't come from and that's the Hebrew Bible which is very interesting. If you think being a Christian in a moslem country is hard, trying being an atheist. 10 years in prison and 2,000 lashes just for saying it in a tweet.
