Re: Gold as a diversifier - PP gets a mention
Thanks for the posts, excellent find. I'm glad I came across the PP. I don't use it in the "doctrinally pure" way but I sure like the mix. What I've found is a nice sweet spot for me is a 1:1 ratio between Stocks to LTTs and gold. For example, if my allocation was 50% stocks then 25% each ...

Re: Golden Butterfly Portfolio
It's called negatively and weakly correlated assets. The risk mitigation is organically built in not externally derived. I continue to be dumbfounded at the focus on the PPs individual pieces. The only thing that makes sense to me is a "factor" tilt of some kind. For someone younger I can...

Re: Joe Biden fans?
I am considering voting for a Democrat, provided they are not a lunatic. That however, is a pretty short list. Both Bloomberg and Biden are wrong on most of the issues I care about. But they are not nuts or morally bankrupt. And I am reliably informed they can read and write. As for the others... I...

Re: PP vs Dividend Growth Investing
I agree. However, I do wish US tax law was more neutral on this and it should be. It would give shareholders more power in forcing dividends for companies that probably should be paying dividends vs retaining earnings. The downside of not having a neutral tax code is it leaves effective business val...

Am I wrong on this...to me since entering the commercial medical system it’s all about wringing the procedure bell as many times as legitimately possible for a given medical issue.

Also, the only reason the company has any value is its theoretical future dividend, as has also been proven. This is incorrect and is not proven. All you have to do to realize this statement is incorrect is do a Charlie Munger “invert, always invert.” Let’s try it. The only reason there is a dividen...

Re: PP vs Dividend Growth Investing
Xan, The biggest problem with your argument is that less than half of all publicly traded stocks on an exchange in the US pay dividends. If you throw in OTC stocks then it’s around 10%. So clearly it’s not about the dividend. Facts are facts and particularly when those facts are numbers. Owning shar...

Re: PP vs Dividend Growth Investing
Let’s try a different analogy...why and how do people buy and sell homes at a profit or a loss? All homes are cash flow negative every single year without fail. Note I said homes, not commercial property. A business is no different. There are real assets involved and perception of value. The first i...

Re: A Fed Thread
I think a more accurate description is US money is seeded into existence and depending on what is happening in "the environment" money grows or shrinks. Who is getting the repo money, large financial institutions of course. However, by definition repos are fully collateralized (and the und...

Re: H&R Block Tax Software now available
I ran through my initial 2019 tax return using H&R. I like it's simplicity and GUI over TurboTax. However, I was quite surprised at the lack of internal/software tax guidance and background for various issues as compared to TT. It seems to me they would really like you to have to go see an H&...

I looked through the presentation...definitely non-standard (which is fine) Quibbles...not sure how they derived historical performance as far back as they did for both long volatility and futures pie wedges. Maybe it was in the notes somewhere but I am unaware of data sets going back that far for b...

Yes, to a large extent this is yelling at the TV and expecting something to change. But isn't that a big part of what we do here? Awesome, I loved this. It should go down in the board's hall of great quotes! I little more yelling...I'm no lawyer nor do I pretend to have any insight into constitutio...

Re: A Fed Thread
If you just step back and think about the enumeration comment for just a couple of minutes you will realize what complete and utter nonsense it is. The way you are applying it is a literalist use of the term, supported by exactly no precedent, procedure or common practice. I’ll help, there is congre...

Re: A Fed Thread
Actually that's not how it works at all...a law is considered constitutional by the very fact it was approved properly by the Legislative branch. It is then up to an entity to challenge said law's constitutionality and then the Supreme Court can render a decision. Fed fans don't have to demonstrate ...

The fed is unconstitutional and unbacked paper money is a ticking time bomb. DO discuss both assertions, proof, evidence, rationale...and you MUST explain deflation and historically low inflation in Japan from 1990 until now and the developed world from 2008 until now as part of your response. If y...

Re: Gold's Time To Shine?
This is wholly anecdotal... I spent 20+ years under a government medical system (military) and have been in the private system for coming up on 5 years. Some quick observations... I can't really tell a difference for the most part...some small/key differences + Didn't have to hassle with insurance a...

Re: Gold's Time To Shine?
I know some people who go this route and it seems to work well. The questions I’ve heard raised about CHMs is that they don’t really help if you have major (really expensive) healthcare issues...so if this is a reality, I would then say it is a restriction and your “choice” is circumscribed. To me t...

If one has the fortitude to hang through thick and thin it’s a solid plan. Of course that assumes the dreaded SHTF doesn’t happen.

Re: The Bond Dream Room
I don’t disagree with HB and one should pay attention to duration as a guidepost as to when to get longer again. Simplicity is just do the rules, but applying concepts appropriately is better. Duration and yield tell you everything you you need to know to make a solid bond decision (and taxes if you...

Re: The Bond Dream Room
Rationally you hold if you are carrying something that yields higher than the replacement. There are no interest change scenarios where replacing them does better financially. Eventually as the bonds age that could change, but not for a while.
