Re: Bitcoin is Galt's Gulch

Bitcoin is anti-central bank. And thus is the enemy of governments. They largely have not understood (or underestimated?) this so far. But yes, it will continue to be banned and regulated throughout the world. But the banning of Bitcoin in some countries actually makes Bitcoin more appealing in oth...

Re: BTC in the PP

Durability : Gold - millennia, bitcoin just a decade and that could be replaced at any time. Portability : Don't transport gold across borders, liquidate it, electronic transfer the capital, repurchase at the target destination. Divisibility : Again gold can be liquidated and sub-divided Uniformity...

Re: How do you invest the Cash portion?

Equally valid PP cash/bond (treasury) options are IMO : T-Bill/20 year Treasury barbell, 50% 10 year treasury fund, 50% 10 year ladder .... and with the ladder not marked to marked the yearly gains are approximately the average of the 10 year yields. So for 2021 2.154% year end gain. Historic year e...

Re: Will Someone Help Me Buy My First Gold Coin?

As far as what percentage for paper vs. Physical, my gut is that paper is very risky and the counterparty risk is not worth any convenience. Wouldn't be surprised if push come to shove and even physical backed funds could see problems. State confiscations (option to do so written into US, Australia...

Re: Will Someone Help Me Buy My First Gold Coin?

Start with gold funds - that have narrower spreads, then when the portfolio has made reasonable gains use some of that 'other peoples money' to convert some of funds over to physical - that have wider spreads. Keep some of both, funds for rebalancing, core physical gold that is rarely if ever traded.

Re: Bitcoin is Galt's Gulch

What can you use it for besides selling it to someone else? I've wondered this for a long time. This is basically one definition of money. Something like "The most saleable goods are the likeliest to become used as a medium of exchange and eventually emerge as the money." from Menger / Au...

Re: BTC in the PP

I think gold and bitcoin are stores of value. Gold, paintings by a favored dead artist, etc. are finite/scarce and as such tend to store value. When one is selling to raise cash/money another with surplus capital looks to buy. Bit coin scarcity is virtual/manufactured, could vanish overnight. Bit c...

Re: International stocks?

Many firms hedge their foreign currency exposure. Stocks in other countries might be at a different phase in their economic cycle. Adding in stock + FX factors in place of just stock factor alone is paramount to adding more gold exposure, might adjust from 25 each in stock and gold to more like 16/3...

Re: The GOLD scream room

So much of investing is psychological and emotional. After hanging out here for a decade or so, I've seen various posters come and go. It's apparent that some folks always need to feel like they're "winning". Like every single day. That's fine, but that mindset is not a good fit for PP-st...
