Re: Tax Puzzle

most americans do not have enough in assets to safely delay social security if they retire earlier . they would spend down to much . but those who will have rmd tax issues will likely be better candidates since those issues tend to go with bigger balances . for most it would make little sense to del...

Re: Tax Puzzle

well if you will be delaying social security hitting any traditional retirement accounts first has plenty of plus's . the tax gods give us the ability to draw out money from these accounts at zero taxes if we plan right . just the standard deduction and exemptions can allow 22k of untaxed ira money ...

Re: Tax Puzzle

michael kitces wrote an excellent article on tax loss harvesting . Executive Summary Capital loss harvesting has long been a staple of investment tax strategy – so much that the Internal Revenue Code has special “wash sale” rules to ensure that the technique is not overly abused. Fortunately, though...

Re: Tax Puzzle

yep , i can be the poster child for that . i delayed 1 extra year and got hammered Had you engaged in enough loss-harvesting to have a sizable loss-carryover? If so, it should have eaten up a good chunk of your gain. If not, it would appear your problem wasn't loss-harvesting, but refusing to harve...

Re: Tax Puzzle

THERE IS NO MAGIC FORMULA. it depends on so many factors including the size of the gain . in a nutshell what you pay for medicare is linked to your taxable income from 2 years prior . the premium for the year can go as high as 3x the basic rate depending on total taxable income. selling assets when ...

Re: Tax Puzzle

depending on whether you can make use of the zero % tax bracket you may be better tax harvesting the winner many times . the reason is kicking the can down the road can create tax issues later . we did that and harvested the losers all along and then in 2014 we sold the winner . well up to that poin...

i won't give them a dime anymore , but that's me . service every step of the way could not have been worse . i felt like a ping pong ball getting bounced around and ultimately passed right in to a dead end . no one even monitors those phones in that dept they pass you to for incoming calls . we call...

Re: Soooooo mad at Vanguard!!

here is vanguards official reply . i disagree 100% with their reasoning . we have no use for this kind of trust . only trust we needed was called a disclaimer trust and it was for estate estate tax purposes at one time . it serves no purpose in this case for not having beneficiaries . everything we ...

Re: Soooooo mad at Vanguard!!

i pulled all my money i had with vanguard out last month . i had about 10% of assets with them as i use fidelity 90% . without so much as a heads up they dropped all beneficiaries on joint accounts . they no longer allow beneficiaries on joint accounts . in their ridiculous wisdom they decided that ...

Re: Income portfolios?

even at 65 you have long term money you won't eat with for as long as 20 or 30 years . that money is still long term money and a dividend income fund would be just fine . so would dividend paying stocks , i am just not a lover of taking on individual company risk at any point in time for anything bu...

Re: Income portfolios?

I'm in a low tax bracket myself. I'm just curious if income portfolios can never be a part of lazy portfolios. I haven't seen a lazy portfolio designed for income. I still think the lack of cash is a major Achilles' heel of these funds. It forces the investor to hold cash separately, which means th...

i would not call it a lazy portfolio . my income model is assorted bond funds , assorted duration and a smidgen of a dividend equity income fund . it maintains a volatility of 75% less than the s&p 500 . it's funds change from time to time based on the bigger picture and the updates we get from ...
