Re: Amazon's stock price puzzles me

right now I have to login as my wife to place Prime orders. Thats's not so bad, is it? In the grand scheme of things, no, it's not a big deal.  But I don't have access to some of my wishlists, and order notification goes to her instead of me, and things like that.  First world problems for sure.

Re: Amazon's stock price puzzles me

I think that a lot of people aren't aware of how well Amazon Prime Video stacks up against Netflix, but I assume they will find out sooner or later. It will be interesting to see what happens if/when/how the whole net neutrality issue gets resolved.  That has the potential to blow up the various vi...

Re: First Job

My first job was picking and selling strawberries at age 11-12.  A friend's brother owned some land and grew the strawberries.  We'd pick in the morning (got 25 cents a quart IIRC) and then sell them at a roadside stand in the afternoon.  Can't say that I enjoyed the picking too much, but the sellin...

Re: Got $1,000 saved for retirement?

I would be curious to know how the "amount saved for retirement" has changed through the last several decades.  Anyone have that info?  I would not be surprised to find that there has always been a significant percentage of people that had saved little or nothing.

Re: Spouse IRA

I am in no way a tax expert, but I'm pretty sure you can contribute the max to your wife's IRA (I think it was $5500 last year) and deduct it on your 2013 return (if it's a traditional IRA).  She is treated separately from you for IRA contribution purposes and you have until April 15, 2014 to make t...

Re: Favorite Winter Event?

I've always liked the various Alpine Skiing events. It might have something to do with the fact that I saw ABC's "agony of defeat" intro many many many times as a kid (even though that was a ski jumping accident). Always liked bobsledding and luge.  I guess I just like seeing people go fas...

Re: Predictions For 2013

I agree that it's not just women leaving the labor force.  But we could revert to a mean for participation rate, even if the composition of the labor force is different than it used to be.

Just thinking out loud... not sure it makes any real difference.

Re: Predictions For 2013

The overall labor force participation rate has been dropping since 2008: http://data.bls.gov/timeseries/LNS11300000 So whatever the reason for the lower "unemployment rate", it isn't because more people are working as a proportion of the population. Yeah, that's what I was saying.  Kind o...

Re: Predictions For 2013

What sort of economic statistics do people need to hear before they would call this economy "booming"? Unemployment rate is steadily dropping, corporate profits high, inflation low, interest rates extremely favorable for continued growth, Congress just agreed on a budget... Or is it just ...

Re: An interesting theory about bitcoin

When a government official speaks, is it more likely they are telling the truth, or the exact opposite of the truth? I don't have time to examine everything, so I just default to the latter and investigate anything of interest. I think it makes things easier. I'm the same way... I like to call this...

Re: Any guys here watch CNBC?

I don't get to watch CNBC during the day but sometimes I get sucked into their greed/scam shows in the evenings.  And I enjoy The Profit when I can catch it. As for Fox, I kinda like Megyn Kelly... she's hot when she's bothered.  ;D  Hannity is a joke though, way too over the top.  O'Reilly defines ...

Re: Supplements

I had a doctor tell me to switch from cod liver oil to fish oil because there are more toxins present in the liver (or something along those lines).  Is that just bad advice?  If you compare the labels on a bottle of fish oil vs cod liver oil there is very little to distinguish between them which ma...

I bucked the trend and moved to New Mexico. Zero regrets. Life so far has been 100% better, and a hell of a lot cheaper too. Did you break down on your way to somewhere else?  My sister lives in Albuquerque and she always jokes that everyone she knows was headed somewhere else until they broke down...

Re: What kind of dog should I get?

I used to be a "big dogs only" person based on my experiences growing up, but my family (kids 12 and 9) has had a mini goldendoodle (golden retriever - miniature poodle mix) for about 2.5 years and he's really been a great dog.  He's about 25 pounds, super soft fur, doesn't shed at all, ex...

Re: Do most people tend to accumlate money in their cash portion?

I'm tending toward the "lazy" approach of allowing money to accumlate in the cash portion, but am always second guessing that approach. That's what I do because it's easier.  However, rebalancing intervals will vary depending on the amount already in the PP and the size of contributions (...

Yep... I asked about ZeroHedge here several months ago and someone described it as "Doomer Porn" which is perfect.  I rarely go there anymore, although it was ZH and similar sites that prompted me to question my investing non-strategy which eventually led me to the PP and this site.

It seemed late when BTC was $200, so who knows?

Also, while I don't disagree about issues with bitcoin in the event of a massive power failure, I bet there would be a lot of safe deposit boxes that are inaccessible too.  Just something to think about.

This is interesting given that I just posted yesterday about Coinbase.
