balance between paper/physical gold
Hello all, I am 19 year old PP investor. To make things simple I have all of my gold holdings in the GLD, mainly because i get free equity trades ;) However, I am feeling the need to diversify into physical gold. I still want to keep some GLD shares for rebalancing because the commissions are so mu...

Re: Tax Planning Thoughts Evolved
Luckily I get free equity/etf trades :) Moda, if you ever find a good solution for the gold or treasuries please post here. Looking over EDV vs. TLT, it is too different for me, even if I were to only hold it for 30 days. This strategy gets me excited because I love free lunch! I really think the PP...

Re: Tax Planning Thoughts Evolved
I'm surprised this thread doesn't have responses yet! I had never thought about skirting the wash sale rule using that method before. Pretty brilliant really. I am hunting for a way to skirt the wash sale for the gold portion but I have had no luck. I'm guessing swapping GLD for IAU is a no-no. I be...

Re: Rising Interest Rates
Well, interest rates usually go up in times of inflation, so in the early phase of rising interest rates I suspect gold will be going up. Now, to fight inflation, the federal reserve will be forced to raise short term interest rates. Eventually, short term interest rates will go up enough to curb go...

Re: equal-weighted index funds for stock component
I don't like two things about this. Firstly, it is less tax efficient and secondly it takes you farther away from the efficient market hypothesis. EMH is not perfect but it ain't too shabby either.
Re: Cash why?
I am only 19 so holding cash seemed like a horrible idea to me because I'm usually told I should be investing in a risky portfolio. It's easy to thinking of cash is a do nothing asset but that is not entirely accurate. It's not as useful as the other assets because it has low volatility, but it stil...

New Permanent Portfolio Mutual Fund
I'm sure some of you have thought about this... Wouldn't it be fun to set up a mutual fund that gets it right. Most people on this forum would not invest in the current Permanent Portfolio mutual fund because it's positions seem outdated and biased towards inflation. Plus, active management and high...

Re: What about a high yield dividend stock fund?
Is this in a tax deferred account? If you have to pay taxes, I'm almost positive this strategy will lag a total market index in the long run.

Re: Individual Equity Basket vs. Index Fund
Volatility is only worth chasing if you are rewarded for chasing it. Some people load up on emerging markets and SCV because some academic literature suggest you get compensated for taking on this risk. This might be true. However, most academic literature suggests that you don't get compensated for...

I just finished listening to the show. I'm excited to hear you really get into the meat of the PP! Great job.

Gold and Treasuries Correlation
The PP makes the assumption that LT Treasuries and Gold are a binary pair. Treasuries are correlated with deflation and gold is correlated with inflation. You can't have inflation and deflation at the same time. I am somewhat concerned with the recent correlations between gold and treasuries. They a...

Re: Leveraged PP?
For ultimate flexibility, and long term returns, I think renting is the best solution. Many people are tied down by their house. They are encumbered by large interest payments, and hard to access liquidity. Selling a house can take months, with hefty broker fees. Also, if you are renting, it is much...

Re: Leveraged PP?
I don't think I would ever want to use a margin account with the PP because of the potential for margin calls. However, I think it could make since to avoid paying off your house as soon as possible and instead invest your extra money in the PP i.e., taking out a 30 year loan when you could afford a...

Re: Clarification on TLT duration
Thanks. I'm pretty excited about it. I feel like I own my own mini hedge fund, except unlike most hedge funds I'm actually hedged ;). I have heard all the reasoning for running a riskier allocation at my age, but with the PP I can put away more money than I would with all stocks. I have 90% of my mo...

Re: Going PP Means IGNORING Market Data Forever
I bought in a couple of months ago. I still enjoy looking how the portfolio performs every day. I get a kick out of all the opinion pieces saying that gold or bonds going down is "inevitable." I definitely don't read the news as if my portfolio depends upon it, like I used to. I am young a...

Re: VEU: Total International ex-US as 100% of the Equity Portion
For an easy compromise you could go with VT which is 40% US, 60% international. You also have the benefit of the entire thinking being market cap weighted reducing any need for future tinkering. This way you just let the market choose where your money goes. Personally, I am fine with just using VTI....

Re: If I go PP, do I still need a Cash Emergency Fund?
I am quite young, 19 in fact. I have 90% of my money in the PP. I am very comfortable with this because it has proven itself to me. I don't think it would be crazy for you to put your emergency money in the Permanent Portfolio. The reason I use the PP is because I am so comfortable putting a lot of ...

Re: Reducing volatility
I have been doing a lot backtesting of portfolios trying to tweak the PP. Something we have to keep in mind is that we are measuring volatility with nominal numbers instead of inflation adjusted. This makes gains made during a high inflation period look bigger than they are when using real numbers, ...

Re: Japan PP performance after its stock market crashed
I am really interested in your work clive because 25 in each asset seems too simple to be the best available option. However, the goal of the PP is to return a constant rate of return after inflation, not nominally. When long term treasuries are doing well you are getting the nominal return from the...

Re: Clarification on TLT duration
Ah. Ok. I realize now that I really didn't understand what effective duration was. I was confusing it with average weighted maturity. I'm only 19 so I don't have enough capital to buy physical gold or treasury bonds and make it worth the expenses involved. I would love to own a vault behind a secret...

Clarification on TLT duration
Hello all, This is my first post on the forum and I look forward to many more because it seems like a great place to learn. So i made the leap and bought the PP, so far its been about a month. I'm using TLT for the long bond portion because i have free equity trades. However I keep reading mixed thi...
