Re: New Permanent Portfolio Charts

Yes, the PP charts track dividends. For another comparison, I've overlaid the 1970-2010 PP graph, above, (again, the plots from 1970-2004 are directly from Harry Browne's original chart ) on top of a logarithmic chart of the S&P 500 and the DOW — using the original Harry Browne chart as a refere...

New Permanent Portfolio Charts

For the purpose of performance comparison (and posterity) I created a hypothetical Permanent Portfolio on smartmoney.com and set it up with 1/1/2004 as a starting date. I applied 15/35 rebalancing bands and swept approximated dividends into cash until rebalancing. The SmartMoney.com portfolio aggreg...

Re: Using I Bonds for Cash

Why do they require you to purchase the paper I-bonds to reach your 10K limit? It seems like an odd requirement when the electronic versions are easier to issue.

Rebalancing strategy for bonds

Half of my Bond allocation is in my Traditional IRA (in the form of TLT where dividends are automatically reinvested tax free). I have about 30 years to retirement age The other half of my Bond allocation is in 2040 Treasury Bonds (~4.23%) in my regular brokerage account. Proceeds from these bonds a...

German Hyperinflation, 1923

Here's a fascinating look at the effects of the German hyperinflation in 1923. (The essay was written in 1981).

Re: options for cash

As far as I can tell, PRTXX (T. Rowe Price's Treasury MM Fund) is open.

If the 0.46% and the return is 0.01%, I suppose that means you're losing money to be in the money market fund, no?

Re: Why "Improve" PRPFX

I just ran a comparison of the "4/4" ETF (VTI, SHY, TLT, SGOL) version. For the period of 1/1/05 to date it appears to lag PRPFX by about 2%, although was slightly ahead during the turmoil in late '08 - early '09. I'm just using the monthly closing prices, and rebalancing the 4/4 constant...

Re: Permanent Portfolio Allocator

Looks nice! I need to get Numbers for my Mac. Can Numbers export to Excel format? It can export to Excel, but it can't make the Excel spreadsheet do things that only Numbers can visually do. I had tried exporting this file, but unfortunately I used too many Numbers-specific parameters and design el...

Permanent Portfolio Allocator

For those of you with Mac computers or iPads, I've created a Permanent Portfolio Allocator spreadsheet for Numbers . Just type your account values for each asset into the top section and the bottom Rebalancing section will tell you when it's time to rebalance with automatic color-higlighting rebalan...

Re: One Line combining all 4 components on a chart

I haven't used it in years, but I believe smartmoney.com has a portfolio tracker that lets you track buying/selling and view the combined performance in a chart. Though, you'd have to remember to add the dividends from VTI, TLT and SHY manually into the tool. But, I agree that day-to-day is a little...

Re: 1 investment will save the whole PP?

As HB has mentioned numerous times in his radio show — when the assets go down, they tend to lose -20% or -30% and rarely lose more than -40% or -50% of their value. And technically, they can't lose more than 100% of their value. But, When investments go up, they have much more upside potential. An ...
