Re: No where to hide

i never really gave it much thought. i hate giving opinions on situations i know little about since to retire so early i have to assume either you are getting the money elsewhere and not investing or have one whopper of a savings rate. supporting 60 years of retirement potentially is very different ...

Re: Spreadsheet

i would love to be able to see the growth of 10k from 1987 in dollars with the 4 part pp for comparisons . Since 1987, The PP returned a CAGR of 7.04% with the worst year -2.0%.  Final balance $67,000.  A 60/40 Bogle returned a CAGR of 9.16% with the worst year -20.0%.  Final balance $116,500. now ...

Re: No where to hide

so how would i utilize the pp if i was re-living things again ? first off i would grow my money as aggressively as i could until about 6 or 7 years pre-retirement. i would then use the pp to protect that money now that goals are just about met. once i hit retirement i would move the PP back in to a ...

Re: No where to hide

same problem , negative returns on bonds even with the short term can't support such low equity levels while spending down . right now blanchett found the old  50/50 or 60/40 allocation kept while spending down equally from all parts still  worked best . what most folks do not realize is the current...

Re: Spreadsheet

i would love to be able to see the growth of 10k from 1987 in dollars with the 4 part pp for comparisons . i did a quick comparison since 1982 of  prpfx  vs some other  conservative fund like fidelity puritan . i have to say the price you paid  waiting for that next  calamity was quite high. don't f...

Re: Roth vs Traditional

one point i wanted to bring up since i just read it in craigs book  too is , there is this old school belief that  assets  like cash and bonds should fill deferred accounts first since they  get no special tax treatment  like equities do. the problem is no one actually did the leg work to run the nu...

Re: Roth vs Traditional

for most of my career roths did not exist. but now that i am retring i regret taking the deductions all these years when i could have done them. as i wrote above so much rides on your taxable  retirement income that you can get hammered for longer in retirement tax wise than you even spent working. ...

Re: Roth vs Traditional

of course the big question many have is how do i deal with fact i did not do roths. there is no easy answer as each situation is unique to only you. for some delaying social security may be a good answer .    a retired couple can pull 22k a year tax free out of a taxable ira  and up to 42k and pay a...

Re: Roth vs Traditional

It only makes sense if you expect your future marginal taxes to be higher in retirement or you want to avoid the MRD rules. this is the  tiniest reason ,  -whether tax rates go up. even if tax rates were the same or even went up a bit you would be as much as 20% further a head with spendable cash i...

Re: New Strategies for Covering Long-Term Care Costs

one thing i want to mention when it comes to long term care . many think the family will be able to fill the roll of care takers. but typically what happens is one sibling steps up to the plate and the others step back. more often than not that breeds resentment and trouble. if wives are involved th...

Re: The Risk Parity PP

all you need to do to maintain that rosie retirement scenario and still have that 4% safe withdrawal rate hold true is a mere 2% average real return over the first 15 years.  that is all it takes because that rosie scenario you speak of is actually based on the worst conditions we have ever had. whi...

I also said anything i say applys to here and not other countries.

You have corruption ,political risk ,overthrowing gov't risk ,currancy risk  and a whole lot of other risks elsewhere besides just market volatility

Re: The Risk Parity PP

Yep , which is why a portfolio needs to be flexible . Japan was hot when i first starting investing but after the 87 crash lots of things changed in that big picture and it was time back then to move elsewhere. They tightened their money after the crash and drove themselves in to a death spiral. Don...

Re: The Risk Parity PP

We can think of risk anyway we like but if  we kept that vision of japan in our minds the last 25 years we would never be investors. That thinking would historically  left you a whole lot poorer.

There are volumes written about just why we are not japan.

Re: The Risk Parity PP

Well no one can predict but i would say a anything with a 146 year history spanning 111 rolling 30 year periods and a 90% plus success rate would likely still play out well. While i couldn't take the volatility anymore 100% equity would still likely do okay. It has always done well because without t...

Re: The Risk Parity PP

Despite larry swedroe coming up with it there is no way i would ever use a larry portfolio in retirement unless i was only taking 2% withdrawals.

Success rates in firecalc have been pretty poor

It is all about the perks after the insurance runs out . The 3 years coverage is bupkas compared to what you get after that.

Re: No where to hide

Recessions have always been part of the deal . In the accumulation stage standard weightings of intermediate term bonds are just fine. They never last that long . In retirement they are already included in the safe with drawal rate since it is already based on the worst of times in history. The divi...

Re: No where to hide

Hmm, now I have to choose between not looking and bitching. As the saying goes: if you don't look, you can't bitch. as i said above , you get one shot in life to grow your retirement assets. picking a path  that maximizes that effort while staying within your pucker factor is key. being overly prot...
