It shouldn't be feeling comfortable at all...you are losing .95% real as inflation is running about 2.8% now.

Re: Help get me reduce some weight
For IF i think the best fast is the one you like best and can do. Supposedly one needs 16-18 hours for positive effects. My personal opinion on all this diet stuff is the basic physics of a calorie/energy. To lose weight there needs to be an energy deficit, one should pursue the method most effectiv...

See the two links I posted...I'm probably biased, but there is some really good stuff/discussion in there about decay.

Re: My Permanent Portfolio Variant
The US has defaulted on its bonds 2 or 3 times. The US has made gold illegal. All of these events occurred when dollars were redeemable for gold. No serious country does this anymore. Finite things, particularly when scarce and deflation is occurring, make very poor forms of currency. The opposite i...

Sophie’s observation is widely backed by research. It pretty much never pays to wait on deploying cash. Of course, all these studies presume the future will be like the past ( past data upon which they are built).

Re: Risk Parity and the Permanent Portfolio
I'd agree in general as well. However, in my case, even though i'm in my 20's, the Permanent Portfolio is perfect for me. I happen to be self-employed as a freelancer, so my income is very lumpy. As such, the stability and low volatility of the Permanent Portfolio fits right in with my needs. I thi...

Re: Investing new money now
Not to hijack the thread, but for someone who is making regular contributions to the PP, in my case bi-weekly, are there any thoughts as to when or how to invest those funds? Am I better off just buying 25% of each asset bi-weekly? Or should I buy only cash and then rebalance at a set time or when ...

Re: Risk Parity and the Permanent Portfolio
I think it really important to get an old copy of HB's Best Laid Plans and read it. You just get a good feel for the philosophy of what the portfolio is about and why it was constructed the way it was. I personally think the portfolio is way too conservative for a younger investor, but HB was dead r...

Re: Question on safety of ETFs
ETFs are fine. However, there is no doubt that their pricing can get way out of whack with their intrinsic value during periods of market stress. This has happened repeatedly and widely. Remember though the underlying ETFs (not ETNs) hold the underlying asset and large market players (ETF owner/hold...

Great philophy, to tinker only within the PP assets. It keeps you from doing real damage to your portfolio :-) Interestingly, I've been "tinkering" with stocks. There's a world of optimization possibilities: forming a collection of directly owned stocks to be held forever for "deep s...

Re: PP Inspired Leveraged Portfolios
Interesting development. On Twitter I follow some of the volatility guys and it appears ZIV will be more volatile than SVXY. Also much grousing about the basically no notice change on gearing down UVXY (SVXY as well). The OCC ruled there would be no options adjustment so if you were on the wrong sid...

Re: PP Inspired Leveraged Portfolios
That’s pretty much what the previous portfolio was with a dash of XIV thrown in. Going forward I’ll report on a straight leveraged version 50% SHY 16.66 the other three. I consider that the “benchmark” for this version to beat (hopefully).

Re: PP Inspired Leveraged Portfolios
One could check monthly or more frequently. The 100 market days return test is checked monthly and the portfolio was rebalanced monthly for the backtest. Personally I would check returns once a month minimum and rebalance at a level one feels comfortable with. One could use 125, 133 or 150% of targe...

I'm not sure this is all that new and improved and maybe I should go back to the other thread for continuity purposes and let this one die. Thoughts? In any event, the recent XIV unpleasantness was not super fun to my portfolios but a base planning assumption for my allocation to XIV was that it cou...

Re: PP Inspired Leveraged Portfolios
So with the blow up I’m retooling what I was going to track/post on here. I’m thinking 20% st vol was a bit much. :-)
I’m looking at something Golden Butterflyish. Selling vol will still be a part of it but looking at different forms. Could be just a switch to SVXY.
