Re: Gold Coin Counterfeiting today
I bought my first maple this winter, a 2017 with that microengraving. Pretty cool. I'd buy more if they weren't so soft (pure). Price of being pretty.

Yeah, I mean a ban should probably be the result of repeated problems, and this does look like a one-time misunderstanding. Maybe curlew could just put me on ignore and I'll try to recuse myself of this kind if of topic.

Re: Is America Safe, Or Not?
I read curlew's replies. the suggestion I heard recently by someone in the National Parks Service that black people don't visit the national parks because the trees make them think of lynching. It was made by a black person so I guess it was okay. I guess so, too. That's just one of the rules. I don...

Interesting. I haven't seen the x-ray tests, but that would get right to the point, wouldn't it? I'll have to see if I can find one locally.
I think I'll try the iphone app, and if necessary, the Fisch ringer (89 bucks) in the future.

Re: Is America Safe, Or Not?
Back from a trip. Just a quick reply, before this all gets too bizarre. Sometimes the line between humor and offense is closeness between listener and speaker. And sometimes distance is created by the written word on a forum. I've got friends who can do ethnic humor all day long and I'll give it rig...

Re: Is America Safe, Or Not?
And just so you know, curlew (now that I'm on a full keyboard), there's rarely a good reason to casually invoke death camps. Certainly not because of some imagined slight against small towns when the original speaker grew up in one, thank you very much. That's the kind of ignorance that proves my po...

Re: Is America Safe, Or Not?
people in small towns or the countryside even know what a Jew looks like. I can't tell myself. As long as you don't advertise it I would think it pretty easy to avoid the concentration camps. Gee thanks. i shrugged: like I said, I did grow up in a small town. It was uneventful for the most part.

Besides work, I guess spending cash comes from interest & dividends. Whatis not spent is reinvested.
( I do hold the pp, with the full 25% in short term notes).

Re: I need a name for this portfolio
The strange thing, Sophie, is that I feel more stocks equals more cash on the way in the form of 2% dividends. Meanwhile, more cash equals mere future cents on the way. Of course, that is likely to change in coming years.

I'm not worried about future gold purchases because I'll have a testing tool ready, but I shudder to think the random year krugs I already have at the bank could be fake. Hope not.

I tried the usual way to get around the paywall, a google search of the title, but I still hit the paywall. Here is an NBC News story that came up, though: http://www.nbcnews.com/business/business-news/glitters-not-gold-fake-gold-silver-coins-flooding-market-n591201 Hmm. It mentions improved techno...

Saw this today, though it's from August '16. Gold Is Hot This Year. So Are Fakes With this year’s surge in gold prices, many coin dealers are seeing a jump in forgeries; technology is making them harder to detect and easier to peddle -- WSJ on.wsj.com/2b0ZmBr {hopefully the whole thread won't be div...

Re: I need a name for this portfolio
Welcome!
Just to be clear, I only started the thread for fun! I'm a big believer in the pp, although I do tilt to stocks in my completely separate variable portfolio. Is dealing with two portfolios so terrible?
Hope you stick around, immelman.

I guess it's for those who want one-and-done with no rebalancing.
- those who don't want to buy physical gold,
- and most importantly those who don't want to see how the sausage is made,
i.e. don't want to see individual sinking assets.
But, I agree, we could do better.

. They should be 3 for notes and bonds, and 4 for bills. I'm not sure why 0 also seems to work for notes and bonds since the documentation says the index starts at 1. For anyone following along, the table index is the number after "table" and the comma in the importhtml portion of the for...

How do you make these cells point at the CUSIP you're trying to price? I don't know how Mark does it, but I have a separate tab called wsj in google sheets. Cell A1 gets the formula, and when you paste it in there, the table appears. The tab with all your holdings has a cell like this: =vlookup(dat...

Ah, 5-year notes, that sounds familiar. Thank you for the link- I'll have to check that out. It'll be interesting to see if any of the lazy portfolios and other popular portfolios change when interest rates change. Who knows, maybe cash will be beloved again one day. Re: Golden Butterfly and Vanguard
Would you pls elaborate on this pt. It is confusing (to me) to see SCV connected with the PP. The PP is 4X25, without SCV. The pp is about 25% equities, yes. Originally, Browne recommended a few mutual funds of pretty volatile stocks. Not small value or anything, but something he deemed appropriate...

Re: Google Sheets pulling wrong price for TLT
Turns out the problem is that the PDF from treasury lists this particular T-Bill as maturing on 6.29.17, but the table only has 6.30.
I suppose it's kind of silly to follow the value of a six-mo bill anyway.

Re: Golden Butterfly and Vanguard
The SCV performance this year proves Larry Swedroe's theory that if you are going to tilt towards an asset class then it should be a full tilt, not blended with anything else. If you run his Min Fat Tails portfolio with all those short term treasuries, I guess it makes sense to not dilute equities ...
