Re: PP YTD performance - was it the worst ever?

I think more representative is a total bond fund as far as what most use or even how a balanced fund would look In 2008 I think a lot of 401K's had PIMCO Total Return as the bond fund. Not sure if it makes much of a difference overall SPY (60%) and PIMCO Total Return (40%) comes out to -20.15% for ...

Re: Mask wearing / Returning shopping carts

Yeah, I like the Aldi cart system. I like Aldi in general! I have been in their store exactly once. I had read about Aldi and was quite excited to be nearby so that I could finally shop there without making an extra trip. I think this was nearly 10 years ago - December 2012. I loaded up my cart wit...

Re: Mask wearing / Returning shopping carts

I voted 4 - I supported masks at the beginning - returning your cart is just the right thing to do We have an aldi's store near us - to use a cart it is .25 - you get the .25 cents back once you return the cart. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGuiCQGsYyY&t=17s Neat concept - everyone returns th...

Re: Inflation - What are you doing different

I'm applying to higher paying jobs. I spent 10 years at my last job, but after 1 year at my current job, this Biden economy has me begrudgingly interviewing again. I'm quite happy with my current position, but this inflation has me feeling like the frog slowly cooking in a pot. I’m sorry to hear it...

Re: Are most people here sticking with Treasuries?

What kind of allocation are you considering switch to? This is a game that I love to play, because I enjoy tinkering with portfolio backtesters. I haven't done enough homework to identify a better allocation, but the basic idea I've been toying with is to drop LTTs and reallocate that piece to othe...

@GT: I am sorry to hear of your difficulties with the Treasury Direct system. However, I would not rate your credit union very highly either, based upon their lack of customer service in this instance. If it were me, I would schedule an appointment with your branch manager, inform that person of yo...

Re: Quality Time Left

I have a random thought I would like to get the forum's opinions on. I have spent a lot of time the last 10-20 years studying stocks, investments, optimal portfolios etc. The irony was that I never made that much money or had that much in savings for it to amount to much. I was always thinking abou...

I do not belong to AAA and I'm thinking that if I joined today they may not offer me towing services that quickly upon joining? Check your auto insurance policy to see if you have roadside assistance. They will usually tow your car even if it's sitting in your driveway. We had AAA and the free tow ...

For Honda's, at least my vintage, if the MIL light is on you should have the car checked out as soon as possible but the car is drivable in the short term. If the MIL light comes on and is flashing that means a more serious issues (engine misfires..ect) and the car should not be driven until the pr...

Interesting podcast from Animal Spirits about inflation and commodities as a hedge. https://animalspiritspod.libsyn.com/talk-your-book-hedging-the-different-types-of-inflation The guest's contention is that Gold is a good hedge against US Dollar Debasement inflation but does not do well against the...

Re: Backtesting the PP all the way to 1971?

I used to use peaktotrough.com all the time for backtesting. Since that website shut down quite a while ago, I haven't been able to find a good replacement. Portfoliovisualizer and other websites I have found do not go all the way back to the Nixon shock, around August 15, 1971, the date that the g...

Re: Are most people here sticking with Treasuries?

I am out of the PP and moved towards what I consider the safest thing I can at the moment: Cash + a portfolio of conservative, dividend paying stocks. Within those stocks is a healthy dose of energy and precious metal royalty companies that should help to deal with inflation a bit. Although it does...

On changes... I like to earn interest and not pay it. The only exception is my mortgage which I was pretty darn sure that when I locked it at 2.25% for 15 it was going to end up being a great rate. Did I peg the mortgage low, absolutely not...but good enough. One can only get so lucky in these thin...

Nothing at all. I'm going the opposite direction. Bought my house 40 years ago this month. When looking at the house the realtor said, "You cannot see it now because of the snow ... but the driveway is going." 40 years later there is not much left. New driveway going in in July - $8,200 (...

Spun off from a topic in the PP section Kbg had a great observation on inflation and the root cause Until supply gets unscrewed (or demand gets crushed) inflation is here for a while. I don't see the Fed crushing demand anytime soon. It hasn't been in their kitbag since the early 80s and I think the...

Or we could go with what is the actual reason...super loose money combined with scarcity. The former does not cause inflation, the two together do create it and we have both going on. When t-bonds spiked I think it was January of 2020, I think I sold half of my t-bonds. Have been running them at 15% or so. Maybe 2 months ago, I sold exactly half of what was remain...
