Re: Unequal Sector Coverage in ETFs
FYI -- I published a new post today that reviewed portfolio returns in the first half of 2022, and it included a section on this topic. Halfway to Nowhere: 2022 Mid-Year Portfolio Rankings Be sure to take a look at the "stock sectors" chart in the article and think about what the resulting mix woul...

Re: Scarce and high priced energy in Europe
Re lack of “total life cycle analysis” — isn’t that the free market way? And getting others to pay for external impacts? Yeah, said a little tongue in cheek, but, am I wrong? Do we stop using petroleum based products until everyone can agree on the total life cycle costs and how to make the users of...

Nothing special. I just plug in a USB mouse with my macs. If you're talking about a trackpad...its been a couple years since my daughter killed my mac air. But that thing worked like a dream...is right click tap with two fingers? <snip> Yes, two finger And, there are customizations I believe

Re: Scarce and high priced energy in Europe
France went all in on nukes a few decades ago, which was a good geopolitical bet during a time when solar and wind weren't yet economically practical. And even today, nukes are great in the same way fossil fuels remain great: they have an absurdly high power to weight ratio. That's why both of them...

Re: Anybody got Beef with the Dispatch, Jonah Goldberg, David French etc.
The neocons' animating philosophy has been to remake the world a country at a time, into nations friendly to the US, by whatever means necessary. As you can tell, I have no use for them, and I don't care if I agree with all of their other positions. Ok, I Shrugged gets his wish and neoconservatism ...

Re: Session chat app
It’s a fork of Signal, and they promoted the fact that you don’t need a phone number to sign up. Same deal with the Wire app, which I think I learned about through a former member here (now banned). With Session, you don’t need an email address either, but extra privacy is not worth it, obviously, ...

Re: Any Mac Users here?
Actually buying my first ever mac laptop. Anything I should be aware of as a decades long Windows user (minus iPhones and iPads)? Gonna take a bit to get used to the small differences. I got OS X The Missing Manual back when I got my first Mac, and it helped Definitely some differences on keyboard ...

Actually buying my first ever mac laptop. Anything I should be aware of as a decades long Windows user (minus iPhones and iPads)? You'll find the keyboard utterly deficient. Maybe the biggest problem is the lack of a delete key. They have one labeled delete, but it's actually backspace, and there's...

Re: Any Mac Users here?
I don't know if there is a way around it, but I hate having to click through all the file folders to get somewhere. I really miss the windows address bar like this where I can cut and paste locations. But maybe there is a hack I'm aware of. But aside from that, my old Mac air lasted 9 years until m...

Re: Trump reelection bid
1) Term limits - eg Biden has worked out dozens of ways to conceal bribes over decades as a senator. If you churn politicians, that breaks up the trust they could build over time with bribers "donors and lobbyists" 2) Ranked-choice voting - As expected, blocked by DeSantis and Newsom. If your 1st c...

Re: Synthesis of the PP and GB portfolios
Oh, I am FAR from any expert on this. My stock allocations in retirement accounts have tending to be anywhere from 50% US Large / 25% US Small/Mid ; 25% INTL to around 50/35/15 or some such I'm pretty sure 100% US Large (TSM / SP500) did better this century vs such a split, but, if I ever went 100% ...

Re: Synthesis of the PP and GB portfolios
FWIW, my retirement allocation is also about 50% stocks, GB inspired So, I think overall looks fine I'd probably avoid international (Gold kinda provides some of that diversification) And, I'm Meh on TIPS. No cash, high on stocks, low on duration -- I'd keep bonds focused on the bond role in the por...

Re: Bluff Called???
What I’d really love to see (lots of assumptions I’m making so let’s get that out of the way)…is for the Hillary case to be restarted, the Trump case to go forward and they both get a nice public day in court and let the jury do what juries do. I don’t really care guilty or not, but the principle o...

For Nuclear, I though also issues with uranium? Got so used to getting supplies from deactivate weapons, that many mines went off line? And, there is still that threat of worst case scenarios that dings against Nuclear I assume around now (and this winter!) many in Germany wished they'd kept some ar...

Re: Are most people here sticking with Treasuries?
I have to assume that high-yield savings account interest rates will increase again soon to catch up with T-Bills. I'd hope so, but, they seem to be going up slower than I expected (including CDs, although I've only checked those rates at Ally) 1.6% at Ally for Savings; 2.14% for 4-Week T-Bill. Not...

Green vs. Fossil Fuels Subsidies in the US (you can get a lot of other numbers looking around though...but none suggest the ratio is much different) 20B vs 60B I'm completely for no subsidies for both. An actual conservative complains about both. A lib complains about the second a RINO complains ab...

Interesting list and looks reasonably the same now but I'd put the car salespeople above the politicians. Interesting how 10 years ago more than half of people thought politicians were not to be trusted. And yet, we still vote the slease bags into office. Shame on us! Or as Soros might say "you get...

I definitely relate to jl's last paragraph. A couple of quick thoughts. Holding actual non-interest bearing cash in a fiat money system is categorically about as stupid as it gets financially. In the US you at least need to be holding STTs. You can buy them as short as 4 weeks. Also, the Boglehead'...
