Re: I miss Craig Rowland
Europe is lost already, too late, war is the only solution, which is obviously what the governments want. Only the cultural marxists are still cheering for the multicultural hell while their daughters and wives get raped/robbed/murdered. People think that those against mass immigration are some kin...

Re: I miss Craig Rowland
Is that the 5th economic climate that no one else has discovered? Even though your answer is not serious, I would actually say that the culture of the country and how it is changed with immigration is the 5th economic condition. For instance, does anyone honestly believe that 1 million uneducated t...

Re: I miss Craig Rowland
Let's try and stick to the PP as there are other sections on the site for you to push your political views. By the way, I am an immigrant. Since this thread was addressed to me and people wanted to know why I'm not posting I answered them. That reason is that stopping mass immigration is more impor...

He has good timing. Leaving after another negative year... It's way more important today to discuss and get people to understand the immigration risks to the U.S. and western countries than to talk about money. The Permanent Portfolio is small potatoes compared to these other issues. You think it's...

Re: Average Investor Return for 2015 was -3.09%
Many funds in 2015 were negative, and many were also worse than the Permanent Portfolio. If you invest long enough you're going to get negative years. It's just a question of how negative you can handle with whatever asset allocation you're using.

Re: Argentina Near the Bottom?
Argentina will always be screwed. Culturally they are just too broken and corrupt to be taken seriously long-term. They really love leftist ideas and worshipping Eva Peron's carcass. Play the economy for short-term gains if you feel adventurous, but other than that stay the hell away from Argentina...

Re: Why the PP is better in accumulation than you think
but as kitces study teaches us it isn't the drop . it is the recovery time . a moderate drop and long recovery time can be devastating to a retiree. 2008 was a non event , equity's tripled since the low over a very short period of time and the 2008 retiree is right on track in there with any other...

Re: Why the PP is better in accumulation than you think
it had to be bad investor behavior and not markets that did them in . I don't even think bad investor is the right term. It's more of natural fear of losing everything/loss aversion in humans. Most people will not simply sit back and watch 20, 30, 40% of their life savings evaporate without panicki...

Re: Why the PP is better in accumulation than you think
Great post. I know people that got burned in 2000 and took years to get back into the markets only to get burned again in 2008. They have completely cratered their savings from these experiences. All of these investors would have been much happier in a lower volatility portfolio and would have defin...

Re: Credit Card Fraud
Don't feel sorry for the credit card companies. They are well aware of the avenues of fraud but often weigh convenience over security. They consider it a cost of doing business and roll it into their interest rates. Chip cards are common everywhere on the planet but in the U.S. There is a deliberate...

Re: Why the CPI might underestimate inflation
I think Shadow Stats overstates the case dramatically. I generally think that CPI is probably understated by a small amount. Again, close enough that economists can argue back and forth on it and never reach agreement. But to say that inflation is 10%+ when the CPI says it's round 3-4% is just too m...

Risk parity. Meh: http://gyroscopicinvesting.com/forum/permanent-portfolio-discussion/pp-vs-risk-parity-funds/msg61780/#msg61780 My bet is on the simple HBPP: 1) Lower costs. 2) Simpler to setup and manage. 3) Fewer moving parts inside the asset classes. 4) No leverage. 5) Doesn't try to complicate ...

Re: Why the CPI might underestimate inflation
The CPi might underestimate inflation for a very simple reason: It's a government agency run by a political appointee that may be trying to make his/her boss look good. I have felt for years that the CPI probably underestimates inflation by some amount. What that amount is would vary I'd think by ac...

Re: PSA: I now have a 3-year period with no gains
I'm not complaining about performance, but come on! Since 2009 aren't equities up 150-200%? Is the PP up anywhere close to that? Please let's not pretend that it's kicked any ass recently. etfreplay.com shows 7.9% in 2009 vs. 26.5% for 100% S&P 500. In 2010 it was 14.5% vs. 15.1% for S&P500...

I don't know how many companies fro 1802 are around toda...

Re: Is it a good idea to replace gold with gold mining stocks in PP?
Some of the biggest investing shysters I've ever heard have always been pushing junior mining stocks. The entire industry is a money sinkhole, and I don't mean one with gold at the bottom. If someone wants to invest in mining stocks as a speculation, I'd stick to a large well-managed index fund like...

I don't have any stop losses, because I'm not going to sell any of my holdings until I'm good and ready to sell. This is definitely the correct answer. Stop losses promote bad portfolio management. I wrote about it a while ago why they're not the great idea that they seem to be: https://web.archive...

Re: PP bonds or ladder... direct lay-over
The Cash/LT bond split is easy for most people to pull off. Not a lot of maintenance in an already intimidating market where they are asked to buy bonds directly which many people have never done. I think as you go up the scale in terms of bond laddering mechanics the complexity increases of course,...
