Re: Perth Mint Online Depository Program

Thank you very much ahrunforthehills! I originally considered Perth Mint accounts to be custodial. I've been oscillating between the two possible choices reading the IRC and trying to interpret it. It's of course thorny but what seems to matter is that the mint is not a bank. I should share my analy...

Re: Perth Mint Online Depository Program

This year, I have enough in the account that I need to report it on form 8938. This account is in my name only. I think it is considered a "Foreign Deposit Account" so has to be reported in Part I rather than II and also in Part V rather than VI of form 8938. What is not super clear to me...

Re: Tax lots for gold ounces

Right, Libertarian666: thank you, I think you nailed it and so to go back to my original example, only FIFO seems to apply. SpecID would definitely apply to ETFs (assuming the two items are followed) and depending on interpretation of pub 550 likely to bars or coins bought all at once in a given yea...

Re: Tax lots for gold ounces

This is an interesting article and I knew about it Vinny but it focuses on promoting gold investing in tax-deferred accounts rather than on the details of cost basis reporting for gold accumulated over time in taxable accounts. I've "binged" ;) the Net over this and am yet to find anything...

Re: Tax lots for gold ounces

Thank you Libertarian666. I don't know how Swiss banks do and guess I won't ever know myself. I understand Perth Mint would sell per item 1 if asked but wouldn't confirm the specification per item 2. For them, a client owns a number of ounces and the mint sells from that "pot" then confirm...

Tax lots for gold ounces

For mutual funds, IRS pub 550 has a rule in place for specific identification of shares. Specifically: Specific share identification. If you ade- quately identify the shares you sold, you can use the adjusted basis of those particular shares to figure your gain or loss. You will adequately identify ...

2 - Yes except perhaps other tax-deferred accounts than IRAs.

3 - No but beware wash sales!

Not responsible for any mistake above - I am no tax person!

Edited as my answer to 1 was SV-centric.

Re: Golden Butterfly rebalancing bands

Tyler: in the GB portfolio, you do not consider SV as a VP and the other four assets as a PP, i.e. when rebalancing, you take profits from what would be considered PP assets and rebalance into the SV slice if that is in need of a refill, correct?

Re: Perth Mint Online Depository Program

I've been a happy Perth Mint Depository Program account holder since last year for unallocated gold. I haven't received this email but all my dealings with the mint have been flawless. I should post on this separately. This year, I have enough in the account that I need to report it on form 8938. Th...

Re: The Permanent Tooth and Gum Care Regime

Peelu USA (no affiliation) sells dental fibers made from the same tree as that chewing stick. I have been using http://peelu.com/dental-fibers/spearmint-25-oz/ for years now and my dental hygienist is always amazed at how little plaque I have. I don't really like the taste of it but it leaves my mo...

Re: Perth Mint Physical Gold ETF (AAAU)

MangoMan I do not know, and I also don't know how long the application will take to be processed but I believe this filing to be the last step before the IPO. It would take someone familiar with the SEC filing process and any subsequent steps to guesstimate this, and that's not me. Hopefully soon!

Re: Golden Butterfly Portfolio

Indeed, the choices are many. VBR's E/R is appealing. IJS may have low trading volume but other offerings had even lower ones last time I checked: PXSV is one example, despite being considered by some bogleheads as having an ideal profile, perhaps better than even DFA US Small Cap Value. Of course, ...

Re: Perth Mint Physical Gold ETF (AAAU)

The SEC filing containing a preliminary prospectus (that may still change) is at https://www.nasdaq.com/markets/ipos/filing.ashx?filingid=12695497 and was amended by https://www.nasdaq.com/markets/ipos/filing.ashx?filingid=12779867 (lot to read there). In it, you can see that Exchange Traded Concept...

Not APMEX (that is one of their distributors for coins BTW) but another structure doing their marketing IIRC. It's all in the SEC filing.

Perth Mint storage options

Have been doing some research into the Perth Mint storage options. They offer a Perth Mint Depository Online account (PMDO) and a Perth Mint Depository Program account (PMDP – unlike PMDO, PMDP is offline so transactions are by phone, email or fax). I assume the following for a US taxpayer residing ...

Perth Mint Physical Gold ETF (AAAU)

I stumbled upon information regarding the planned launch of a new ETF with symbol AAAU by the Perth Mint: https://www.nasdaq.com/markets/ipos/company/perth-mint-physical-gold-etf-1051518-86628 . Expense ratio is yet to be defined but hopefully compares favorably to the 0.15% charged for Perth Mint G...

Re: Golden Butterfly Portfolio

Just thought I'd give a quick update on my own personal Golden Butterfly portfolio for anyone keeping track. If you read back a ways you'll note that I have 100% of my money in the GB but (after an extended bout of analysis paralysis) chose to go with small cap blend over small cap value when first...

Re: Brita faucet filters

How much work are the reverse osmosis units to use/maintain?  e.g. the one MG recommended? It set it and forget it pretty much.  I never think about it except when I need to test the water with a TDS meter about once a year. Then you just unscrew the housings on each of the four filters, clean it o...

Re: Brita faucet filters

Regarding RO demineralizing water, I once suggested that my plan was to remineralize RO water by adding minerals back to it. This is what brewers do to "recreate" the water found where a given beer is produced. At least one person has posted recipes on how to approximate a large number of...

Re: Optimal Salt Intake / The Permanent Rehydration Water

Been thinking about and reading about what to do regarding my water for awhile. For the most part my tap water is okay (http://www.pinellascounty.org/utilities/PDF/CCR_2014.pdf) but I don't mind spending a little extra to just be sure. I have been looking at Reverse Osmosis type systems but then yo...

Re: Omega-3 Fatty Acids Linked to Higher Risk of Cancer?

Great supplemental info so far!  Good thing I rely on eating the real thing (though mostly canned) rather than fish oil pills. As always with everything nutritional, it is more complex than it seems. For example, the first link provided by Gumby discusses the benefits of continuing to consume fermen...

I wonder what our nutritional experts think of this article...
