Re: Gold's Time To Shine?

My perspective is that I'd still rather go with the Canadian health care system than the American one if given a binary choice. Though, obviously, there is bias in my perspective. The waiting time issue is not as bad as portrayed in my humble opinion. We follow a triage system in Canada. If it's a ...

If a Hurricane hits a city already Quarantined due to the Coronavirus, how will it be Evacuated?

Suppose a city that's prone to catastrophic hurricanes is quarantined due to widespread coronavirus cases. Then when hurricane season comes along, a massive hurricane similar to Irma, Katrina, etc is about to directly hit that city, leaving it flooded and uninhabitable. How would it be handled? With...

Re: The Permanent Tooth and Gum Care Regime

I had not previously heard of Novamin. Googling it, I found an NIH paper that states that the substance has promise as an anti cavity agent, perhaps superior to fluoride. I assure you that the ADA and or other dental groups are not trying to prevent its use unless they feel it is unsafe for some re...

Re: Bullshit Jobs (Article)

At the end of my career I could have easily done what was expected of me on my job in 15 hours a week or less. There were actually some weeks in which I spent every minute of my required 40 hours doing absolutely nothing but surfing the web. The biggest challenge was figuring what bullshit to put o...

Konmari Method for Keeping Your House Clean

I've been studying her method and philosophy for tidying your home right now and it sounds great for people who lean towards a minimal lifestyle. I won't go over all of it nor am I an expert in it (and you can google for what the method involves in detail) but here's a gist: - The underlying philoso...

Re: The Permanent Tooth and Gum Care Regime

Anyone try toothpaste with Novamin which I hear works even better than the Crest Cavity Protection paste recommended here? I hear it's banned in the US but not illegal per se and you can buy it off of Amazon, though at inflated prices. And one of the reasons it's banned is because it worked so well ...

Re: Why should PP continue going up?

"Why should ______ continue to go up?" You can substitute many things for PP in that questions..... Real estate, 60/40, any number of lazy portfolios, farm land, silver, muni bonds, etc, etc. Unfortunately no one can ever answer these with certainty. My belief is that balanced portfolios ...

Not a CFP ?
CFP is fine too and one of the most respectable designations (in addition to CFA and CPA.)  Like the name suggests, it's best for a financial planner or advisor.

If you want to work in the industry, go for CFA.

If you just need advice for managing your own investments, trustworthy forums and blogs are you friend.

Bridgewater's All Weather fund is one of the closest implementations of the PP although I never seen any mention of the PP or Harry Browne in any of the literature they've publicized.

Re: Low-cost smart phone plans

I use T-Mobile's $30/mo plan with 100 minutes and 5 GB of LTE data per month (in the US.)  This works on any modern unlocked smartphone. You may need a Skype unlimited account (for about $3/mo) if you make a lot of calls.  I tend to use Skype to make all of my outgoing calls and save my 100 minutes...

Re: Are you buying, holding, or selling the PP?

I'm considering switching my tax-exempt and tax-deferred accounts to a variation of Ray Dalio's All-Weather strategy (at least the versions he released to the public.)  Risk parity might be a bit tax inefficient so I'm still sticking with the PP in my taxable accounts.

Re: Proposal To Change This Section To "Other Lazy Portfolios"

Up to you guys..  I'm fine with either a separate forum or renaming this to "other lazy portfolios."  The bottom line is, I'm far more interested in discussing other lazy asset allocations rather than the few PP funds out there.

I'll admit I sometimes engage in speculative rebalancing if the asset over 30% is overbought or under 20% is oversold..  but I'll still respect the rebalancing bands and manually rebalance at 15/35.

Re: Why do you use the PP?

IMO, the PP is the closest allocation I've seen to casting a completely neutral view on the economy.  It sounds counter-intuitive but even going 100%, which seems like the default state for many people, is NOT a neutral view.  In that case, you're betting that your cash will outperform all assets an...

Re: Under what circumstances would Permanent Portfolio do poorly?

The scenario you're envisioning to was referred to as "tight money recession" by Harry Browne. During this time, stocks, bonds, and gold may all simultaneously decline. When this happens, it's not just the PP that suffers: everyone invested in anything not 100% cash gets burned in the sho...

For your variable portfolio, stop losses make sense.

For the permanent portfolio assets, stop losses basically defeat the purpose.

Re: The Bond Dream Room

Murphy's law: the day I make a contribution to my PP, some asset drops the ball..  this time, it's bonds (but thankfully, I added most of my contribution to gold since that was my most underweight asset and I was rebalancing from contributions.)
