Re: Figuring Out Religion

You're overthinking it.  Evangelicals are the neo-tent revival fruitcakes.  :P Wrong. The term "Evangelical" basically stands for protestant Christians who believe in the "born again" experience and includes mainline denominations like Baptists, Southern Baptists, Lutherans (eve...

Does that figure adjust for the enormous population of Texas compared to most states?  I'm guessing it doesn't.

Also, we lay claim to the world's most famous custodial death.  It also happens to have been the first murder to be aired on live TV.  Any guesses?

The TSA is what happens with you give low-achieving, low-intelligence people unquestionable authority en masse. It isn't pretty. Yes, a friend of a friend of mine is a TSA agent and is an obese, sex obsessed, alcoholic, loser.  Vapid superficiality on every level.  Literally.  He's proud of his TSA...

Re: First they came for the working class

So that was you.  Hmm. Dallas Cowboys fans are hurting right now. What's so frustrating is how close they've been to winning almost every one of the games during Romo's absence, and they've instead lost all of them.  Now, if they can eke out a win against Tampa, and go 7-1 the rest of the way with ...

Our personal assessment of the financial intelligence of borrowers is irrelevant.  Think P.T. Re: Investing in an HSA - Tax Efficiency

An HSA is /almost/ identical to a traditional IRA in terms of tax treatment.  The only significant difference (for now, anyway; all this can change at any time) is that there's a 20% penalty for early withdrawal (for non-health expenses) rather than a 10% penalty for early withdrawal from an IRA. Th...

But what will happen to the Euro bonds when the Euro currency is obliterated? What happened to bonds in marks, lira, and francs when the Euro was introduced?  IIRC, the Euro was a digital currency only for some years before it became paper.  Maybe that was part of the transition?  I'm assuming a Eu...

no doubt ,  but then these folks should not be investors  . Re: The High-Inflation 1970s vs. The ZIRP 2010s

I think the low inflation, low nominal returns environment is better.  Capital gains and interest are taxed, whether they're real or not.  Therefore, the real tax rate is much higher in a high inflation environment. Tax rates are linked to inflation now.  They weren't in the 70's, however. I think ...

For me, the major risk of chasing yield with a long-term CD is that if interest rates jump, my "cash" won't be able to take advantage of that for 5 years.  It isn't really "cash" unless its return responds quickly to short-term interest rates. However, maybe that event is extreme...

I do (at least for now) reinvest dividends and bond interest (apart from the ones I hold directly, of course), but another downside is that reinvesting can complicate your holdings. If you want to sell some of a stock fund and avoid a wash sale, the automatic purchase as a result of a dividend can m...
